Fashion Challenge Day 5: They pulled out the big guns this time

This last day of the fashion challenge just might be my favorite yet. It's been a blast watching the girls pick outfits all week, but today they really cut loose -- rolling pants for a custom look (Ree made hers into shorts while Ro went for one big trendy cuff), adding fun legwarmers, and accenting with wild rubber shoes, including a new pair of Jellies we got at the mall last night. I think it works perfectly, in a crazy sort of a way. And it makes me laugh that I used to wear Jellies and legwarmers in the 80s. Maybe I'll try to dig up an old pic and post it. Anyhow, the big surprise for me is that it turned out to be really relaxing letting go this week and letting the girls have fun with clothes, and I actually really liked all the unique outfits Ro and Ree came up with. DSC_3192ms Here's a glance back at the last five days (Ro left, Ree right): Day 1 of the fashion experiment (they chose everything) Day 2 of the fashion experiment Day 3 DSC_3027m2 DSC_3192ms Show us your kiddo's outfit too: We've had so much fun with this that we're going to make it a regular feature for one day a week going forward. Every friday (starting right now) I'll post a new Fashion Challenge Friday photo (featuring an outfit that Ro and Ree have styled by themselves that week) and ask for a link to an outfit that your kiddo put together. Your picture can be in a blog post or on an image site or emailed to me for posting -- anything goes. One tip: for the linky box below, enter the url of your post about the fashion challenge, rather than the url of your homepage, so visitors don't have to search for your fashion challenge entry. Alrighty, the first Fashion Challenge Friday is now on. Let your kiddo loose in the closet at least one day this week and show us what happens!

  3. I think it's funny that yellow-obsessed Ree went ALL week without a single drop of yellow!

Oh, and I meant to thank you so much for the advice about things to do with the kids in your area. It was super helpful! I just haven't gotten a chance to reply to your message as it was sent/received through my husband's email account.

I wish I had just a little bit of their fashion sense!

  5. You have your own modern day Punky Brewster - they are so adorable in their choices. I love this idea and we will definitely be participating - my Rylee lOVES to pick out her own stuff. I just need to let go a little bit :)

  6. M3, I've been watching your twins grow up before my eyes going all the way back to your referral. (Somehow my aunt is friends with a distant relative of yours and told me about your blog).
Anyway I love watching what your girls are up to and reading your commentary.
I'd like to give my three year old free reign in the closet, but if you check out my link (fireworks&fireflies) you'll see why I'm a bit nervous. Maybe this week I'll let loose and see what happens...

This was a very brilliant idea. Thinking you might let them dress themselves from here on out? They've certainly got good senses of taste!

I figured it out: kids can only be creative with clothes if they have a huge assortment from which to select their tops and bottoms and everything in-between and they have a mother who has introduced them to different combinations of patterns and color. You have made it easy for them by showing them over the last few years what kinds of clothes and colors go together and have then sparked their creativity by providing a great and expansive wardrobe for them to work with as they create their outfits.

  9. I love how proud they look!

  10. It has been great seeing these adorable pics all week. You have fun and creative daughters. But you knew that.

I am glad it will be a regular feature.

I would love to participate but my kiddo is only 10 months old. LOL!

  11. Hmmmm. I may have to give this a try although my girls are almost 2 so I'm sure it's going to be interesting...

    Great idea!!

  12. I decided early on that I wasn't interested in fighting the clothing battle. As long as the outfit is weather appropriate I just bite my tongue. When there is an event for which I have strong feelings about clothing, I try to give my girl a few days warning and remind her that most of the time she can wear anything she wants but for this upcoming event (wedding, Easter, etc), Mommy will be picking her outfit. Seems to work OK. I love, love, love the outfits your girls have come up with. It helps that their closet is stuffed with such amazingly cute items.

  13. I don't comment often but am an avid reader of the blog. Love it! I am going to try this with my girls...but I have to get organized first. Once i swtich out the winter/summer clothes I will make a week of it. Can't wait.

  16. What a fun and stylish week you have had! I'll be looking forward to Friday's to see what the girls are wearing!

  17. I had a lot of fun visitng and checking out the cute outfits the girls picked out each day, I think they did an excellent job.

  18. OMG! I was just thinking about letting Emma dress herself ONE day out of the week (Wednesday or Friday) then I see this on your blog, cool! I might have to open my blog again just so I can play with your challenge.
She won't be able to do it tomorrow so I might let her dress herself when she wakes up from her nap (she is sleeping right now until 4pm.)

P.S. Are you sure that is Ro in YELLOW and Ree in PINK? Funny girls!

  19. Your girls look lovely all the time!

How do you post pic's on your blog with your own comments written on them? I'd love to be able to do that?

  20. They are fab! Really I think they could go on the design show. They have a in-born style sense.

  21. Kristi: I'm dying of curiosity -- which distant relative?! Can you email me?

Robin: They're definitely on the hook for picking out their own clothes at least once a week from here on out - have to get a pic of them for the weekly challenge. Other than that I'll just ask them what they're in the mood for. I'm betting they won't want to do the full outfits every day, but who knows!

Mexican chopsticks: I couldn't believe it either. Ree didn't choose one single piece of yellow this whole week, instead Ro was the one grabbing it. Too funny!

Tracey: You just need some kind of image editing program, like Photoshop, Elements, or PaintShop. Then you can open the photo in that program, choose the text tool, and comment away.

  22. Oh, this is goig to be fun. I have a post of when I let Caroline dress herself a few months ago: http://horvethappenings.blogspot.com/2008/12/did-you-know-that-burps-can-talk.html

  23. I did this with Maggie in January so I've linked back to one of those posts.

  24. This is a great idea!!! My little girl is such a tomboy so this should be good. You have kept my hubby and I entertained all week.
Thanks for all the good ideas. Your girls are so cute.

  25. Hi M3,
Okay, I've entered, but my post won't actually show up until Friday.... heh, heh... how fun!

  26. Ro and Ree are pros at putting their own outfits together!! I just know that you must be very proud of how they handled their 5 Day Fashion Challenge!! They did a fabulous job!!

  27. I've borrowed some great ideas from you over the years, but we will definitely give this one a miss. My girls would go into the closet strip off and gladly go out, in and around all day wearing nothing but big smiles. Our battles are not over which clothes to wear but just wearing clothes in general.

  28. Your posts this week haave been very good for ME! I, too, am a bit of a control freak! So, I'm working on backing off a bit! Your girls did so great!

  29. What a great challenge......unfortunately, I am the Type A Mom that has to have everything matchy matchy and picked out for my daughter, but you are rubbing off on me.....I might need to let sarah try this over the weekend. Granted, she is a little younger than your girls, so I am thinking, she will not look near as stylish as they do. I have to hand to them, they did a fantastic job!!

  30. Dropped in this morning out of curiosity, from another adoptive parent's link, and LOVE the spontaneity of your adorable daughters! My daughter has a similar fashion flare, but she also adds animals to her frequent fashion statements. LOL I posted my link as #13, Eight is Great.
Thanks for brightening this dreary Texas day!

  31. My older one started to pick out her own cloths since she turned 4. It has been a great fun to watch how she dresses herself everyday. She has tons cute jeans, but she claims she doesn't look good in jeans.

    Love your blog.

  33. M3,
If you get a chance, the photo's up. I don't know what happened to the original photo, but we will definitely try again next week (if you plan to do this weekly, that is!) Thanks!

Where did you get the Olympic Mascot tshirt? We were in Bejing right after the Olympics, and my daughter is still obssesed with the mascots. She knows all their names too.

  37. We got the Olympic mascot t-shirt from Chinasprout, but I wouldn't order from that company again. When we had a problem with an order the customer service was terrible.
