A two-bento day (and the answer to "notice anything different?")
I made an egg salad sandwich a couple of days ago and popped a couple of the eggs into these fun hard-boiled egg shapers my mom had found at the Daiso store. And then, every time I opened the fridge that little bunny and bear were practically begging to be put in a bento.
So the girls got bento lunches today.
(Animal shaped hard-boiled eggs, hush puppies, black olives, shaped rice balls, orange yogurt, and mandarin orange slices)
When dinner time rolled around, I figured we'd just grab leftovers out of the fridge and wing it. But some of the plastic bento containers were still strewn around the counter and Ro and Ree were just dying to make their own bento dinners. Well what the heck, why not? We had a whole bunch of time to kill since TubaDad is away again on a short business trip. So I wheeled over the Learning Tower, let them pick their own containers, and handed them food to put in. They did pretty well and had a ball. And, um, not too terribly much of the food ended up on the floor. (cough cough)
Yes, they're wearing pajamas during the day. Again. And yes, I did straighten things up a just a weensy little bit before snapping this picture. Heh.
(Leftover steamed rice with black sesame seeds, microwavable pork roast, steamed broccoli, fishy container with A1 sauce (don't gag, we ran out of soy sauce, sorry!), apple slices)
After the food stopped flying, Ro said she wanted to take her own peeshur, so I handed her the camera. Interesting angle...
PS: The sharp-eyed folks who said the one of the girls' hair was parted on a different side (in the below post) were correct! Ree (in blue and green) was wearing hers parted on the left side, as usual, while Ro (in brown and pink) had hers parted on a new side, the right side. Both girls still have their bracelets on, Ree on the left and Ro on the right, but I think they were hard to see in the photo. The guesses were great -- I particularly liked the one that guessed "they are standing still???" Ha! Oh, and Ree isn't sporting new self-styled bangs, as far as I know (hmmmm, that's not saying much, is it?). She's just always had a whole bunch of wild wispies on that one side.

I'm just curious: Do you have a nanny or babysitter that comes in? Or do you both just do it on your own?

Wow--what beautiful bento boxes. I love those hard-boiled eggs.
ReplyDeleteI love your bento boxes --not just the box itself (although it's cute), but how you prepared them. I'll have to go and find me some of those hard-boiled egg shapers. :)
ReplyDeleteNo nanny/babysitter, but the girls have preschool a couple of mornings a week and either my mom or my dad will come over to play with the girls and help me out a couple of mornings a week. It works out pretty well unless TubaDad and my folks are all traveling at the same time, then the days are looooooooooong and I have to work extremely fast while the girls are asleep. :-)
ReplyDeleteThe thing I think that is great, is that you let your kids try so many things. You aren't afraid of messes. That is a great quality in a mom.
ReplyDeleteI am pretty impressed that your girls like heathy foods. Kailee will not touch any vegetables. I am pretty lucky she likes salmon and yogurt.
ReplyDeleteWe have those rice molds too and it never occurred to me to put eggs in them. Duh! Great idea. Nice bento presento. :-)

Mmmm...bento! Look yummy and fun!
ReplyDeleteJust realized my confuzzled comment last post was wrong. Ro's part is now on the right which will help their Canadian friend! Cuteness abounds once again!!
are you planning to keep Ro's hair that way?
ReplyDeletebtw,
They look so cute! :)
I'm taking notes with the Bento... we eat very healthfully here (not because I'm Super Mom or anything, but because our first six months together we had a dietitian breathing down our necks - heh), but I've never had to pack lunches for school. Kindergarten is fast approaching...
ReplyDeleteThese bentos look adorable....and I would imagine that they make food so much fun for the girls!! We are going through a food phase here with Sarah....not sure why, but everything she once loved, she is now saying she does not like. I am thinking this might be something that will jazz things up a bit.
ReplyDeleteWhere are you getting all thses adorable bento sets?? I know this had to be asked and answered before, but I searched your sidebar and couldn't seem to find anything....it is probably right infront of my face:)

How bizarre. We were just talking about A-1 on broccoli today at work. No lie.
ReplyDeleteSo when the girls outgrow their bracelets are you planning to replace them? They are very convenient as I'm still only right part of the time. But I assume they won't fit forever at the rate the girls grow.
Hi guys,
ReplyDeleteDiorella: Not sure, if I'll keep their parts on different sides or not, the hair is already somewhat trained to part on the left. I thought it would make it easier to tell the girls apart, but they really never stand still long enough to notice which side the part is on. So, I'm not sure now...
Lisa: All of our bento stuff comes from the local Daiso store (a Japanese dollar store) or the online http://www.ichibankanusa.com/ store. Great stuff and so affordable.
JustMe: We'll definitely replace the bracelets for as long as the girls will let us. They don't even notice them at this point. The bracelets still have at least an inch of grow room though so I bet they'll fit for another couple of years.
Those are wonderful boxes! And the shaped rice is so cool, and the eggs...your girls are beautiful, by the way.
ReplyDeleteI just love those bento meals! Love Ree's shirt!!! CUTE and yes candy makes me happy too. Hope you guys are well. We should try to all get together soon.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter loves those lunches! Now I am going to have to go get everything to make them! I LOVE the eggs!
ReplyDeleteHow in the world do you do those bento lunches... that's the cutest thing I've seen. Looks yummy too!
