TubaDad was upstairs giving Ro a bath (yes the girls are getting separate baths right now to protect TubaDad's sanity—more on that later) and I was hanging out with Ree in the family room. Well "hanging out" isn't quite accurate, to be honest. She was sitting on the little couch with some paper and crayons, and I was slouched on the big couch just zoning out after a reallyreallyreally long day. I wasn't ignoring her, but have to own up to not really paying attention as she scribbled away and asked various questions about hair, eyes, that sort of thing.
So you can imagine my surprise when she suddenly said "I'm done. Yook, mama, it's me!" and handed me this:
Oh my gosh! Little sweetheart. It's her first self portrait, actually her first recognizable picture of anything, and is so crazy precious to me that I don't even have words. She signed her name and told me she was wearing her yellow shoes and those were her ears up on the top of her head. I'll treasure it always.
Ro heard me making a big commotion about it, and later, when she came downstairs, said she wanted to draw herself too. She used all pink, because "I yike pink," and concentrated superduper hard on getting five fingers on one hand and making the "holes" (nostrils) in her nose. Adorable, especially in how different it is from her sister's!
You know these are getting framed, right?

Oh yea! They so need to be framed! What treasures!
ReplyDelete-Jen-
Those are BY FAR the best "Mommy Moments" that I have had with my boys. The first picture that my son Jack drew of me just made me melt into a puddle. Your girls did a great job! Yep, they are framers for sure!!! Way to go Ro and Ree! Keep up the great work girls!
ReplyDeleteImpressive. I can't wait until Casey can do that.
ReplyDeleteUm, are you sure it isn't a picture of Ree in a yellow bikini?
What fantastic little artists you have! I love it :) (However, from a realism point of view, Ro's looks a lot like one of the 3 little pigs, hehe) ;p You should be very proud! They have really excellent fine motor skills for 3 year olds.
ReplyDeleteHow precious!!!!
ReplyDeleteVery, very cute!
ReplyDeleteSo precious!! Wow, Ree's has so much detail. Both are adorable!!
ReplyDeleteawww ... mama! this totally makes me smile.
ReplyDeleteSo Cute!!
ReplyDeleteI thought too that she put you in a yellow bikini! har!
Totally precious both of them.
ReplyDeleteThose are great and yes framing is quite suitable for these beautiful pieces. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThese are Beautiful!

Wow. Some of my 2ND GRADERS don't draw that well! They are totally precious!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely for framing! I love kids' drawings. :)
ReplyDeleteHey!
ReplyDeleteI award you with the HONEST SCRAP AWARD
http://daphnechantell.blogspot.com/2009/08/honest-scrap-award.html
Adorable! The second picture reminds me of the illustrations in the No David series by David Shannon. Maybe it's the nostril holes ... lol!
ReplyDeleteLOVE those pictures and the differences in them!! Perfect and yep destined for framing!!!
ReplyDeleteYep. Framed and set on the mantle. It never ceases to amaze me how different 'identicals' can be. My two drew pictures of birds at the same age, one drew an owl with clothes and make up, the other drew a Blackbird, not a crow, but the SR-71 fastest airplane on Earth kind of blackbird. Ro and Ree will be waaaay ready for school next year.
ReplyDeleteGreat job girls! Frame it for sure! Priceless!
ReplyDeleteLOVE those kinds of pictures! We have a few framed in our house...they are priceless pieces of artwork!
ReplyDeleteHow cute!
ReplyDeletethose definately need framing!
ReplyDeleteat my daughter's kindergarten screening, the only thing she didn't do was put ears on her face. Ree is years ahead of her time!! have you made a decision about kindergarten that you want to share? kara
Those are wonderful. And yes - I love the difference between them. Yet another reminder that they are very different people... definitely something to frame (ok, we didn't frame their first self portraits - but we hung them up in the house)
ReplyDeleteWhen my 2 sons were about the age of your girls, they did their first portraits and I created copies of those portraits (which are in scrapbooks) into needlepoint portraits which to this day hang above my kitchen sink with the plaster of paris handprints they made when they entered kindergarten. I look at them every single day - many times a day - and they still make me smile over 30 years later. Enjoy your priceless treasures!

I have a picture frame with each of the kids' art in it. They are my favourite pics in the house. I always keep their first recognizable pic, they're so sweet. But I also switch out the pics in the one long frame every year. They put their name and age on them. It's so cool to watch them get better and better. I heart kids' art. Nothing could be better. I have it all over my house.
ReplyDeleteVery impressive, especially Marie's,and definitely frame them.
ReplyDeleteAs good, or even better often, are the descriptions children give to their pictures. Worth writing down on the back of each picture.
A treasure to keep forever for sure. I love them both.
ReplyDeletehahaha...they are so sweet..haha i like Ro's piece..her is v artistic!!!=]
ReplyDeletebest wishes for ur family

ReplyDeleteThese are brilliant!

Those DEFINITELY need to be framed! Firsts are always cool... and those are great ones, too. Be sure to pencil in (on the back) that these were their first self-portraits, with the date. Because you will remember it, but they won't.
ReplyDeleteSo cool! Thanks for sharing this neat moment.
ReplyDeleteAwesome. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is so cute! I should put up the the pic Shayna drew of me. These girls are so amazing, aren't they?
ReplyDeleteAmazing at what each thought was so important....wonderful to see their writing and drawings change over time!
ReplyDeleteI think that is the cutest thing I have seen.
ReplyDeleteJust noticed I was logged in as my son again....plumptom is me, Laurel and Maylin
ReplyDeleteOh wow- you've got a budding artist on your hands!
ReplyDeleteSo darn cute!! Most definitely framing material!!
