The hair accessory organizer worth squealing over

Yeah, yeah, I'm freaky about organization. What can I say, it makes me happy. If the squeals are anything to go by, it makes Ro and Ree happy too.

Here's what we did:

1. I bought this clear-plastic, over-the-door shoe holder:

2. I spread it out on the table and handed the girls all of the grimy, ripped, disorganized ziploc bags of hair stuff that we used to throw haphazardly in a big 'ole basket.

3. I told the girls to separate the mess into colors while I pulled out the "basic" stuff like black barrettes and plain rubberbands. Oh man, they thought this was the best game ever. I think they even liked it more than playing Crazy Eights, and that's saying a lot.

4. We hung our new hair center inside the downstairs coat closet and all danced and squealed, it was just that awesome.

The girls LOVE being able to pick out their own hair accessories now. They stand in front of the organizer and chit chat with each other about their various options and argue about the pros and cons of each choice. And they hop and grin and laugh the whole time. It's adorable.

I put a brush, comb, and water bottle at the top, then basics on the next row (the stuff I use underneath any hairdo), then headbands and miscellaneous multicolored stuff on the next two rows, then the last three rows (the ones that the girls can easily reach) are all of their fun hair accessories sorted by color. (Um, yeah, we're a little heavy on the pink and yellow, those colors have two pockets each. Go figure.)

Fun fun fun.

PS: I got the idea to do this from Stephe a long time ago (at least I think it was her, I can't find it on her blog now)—thanks Stephe!

  2. Isn't the real question "what does it say about you that you need such an organizer?"

Your kids have a LOT of hair accessories... :-)

  3. I love this idea ... we need one for shoes, too, and don't have quite so many hair accessories so maybe I can do a two-fer!

  4. i'm so suggesting this to the family i work for. with a 3.5 year old big sister and 14 month old twin sisters that will be accessorizing soon, this is perfect!

  5. This is a great idea. We could really stand for some organization like that. Thanks for the idea.

  6. Nice idea. Another one is to buckle an old belt over a low rod or door handle so there is a lot of tail hanging down, and clip the fragile stuff, like hair bows and large flowers, to the belt. Saves them from being squashed.

  7. I LOVE this idea and have a door it will work on. My only problem is we have a ton of Hard Head Bands and I think they would fall out of the pockets. I would love ideas for those. ;-)

I agree! I need a good headband storage idea also. There just isn't a good way to keep them out of the way.

LOL - it looks awesome!! I can tell I'm not a girly-girl into hair stuff, I have two girls and their hair stuff MIGHT fill one pocket. ;)

  10. Yep, we've had that for a couple of years now, but I can not keep mine that neat and organized, as my girls think it a great game to take it all out and stuff it back in hap-hazardly, I really need to get in there and go through it!

  11. LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we have the same problem- baggies shoved in a drawer that stay organaized for about 2 minutes and we can never find anything-- am copying this idea!

  12. Whao! If you have that many you really need one of those. We have one of those hanging from her bedroom door for all her Barbies. We keep all her hair stuff in our bathroom. She has a drawer very well kept and easy for her to grab what she wants to wear.
I do think it is a great idea the way you did yours.

    Brilliant!

  14. I used this idea for my daughter (who left for college a few weeks ago ::sniffsniff::). We also used one in the arts and crafts area of the house, for small scissors, glue sticks, popsicle sticks, etc. Inexpensive and accessible. Love it.

  15. Mmmm... makes my little organized heart go pitter-pat.

So nice to see the next generation taking on the thrills of organization!

  17. Oh man, this is better than Dunkin Donuts and hot coffee. The simple ideas are always the best ones. When I imagine a world of organized hair accessories for my daughters...oh heavens. I'm light-headed.

    Thanks for sharing!

  22. Great idea!! I love organization as well and with 5 kiddos, I think it is required:)

  23. OK, that's brilliant. And man do you guys have a lot of hair accessories. (I thought we were bad - but we have an excuse - we've been making up for not so much hair.)

We do this with school/art supplies. Scissors in one pocket, rulers another, markers, etc. LOVE IT. Then I got one to put inside my guest room cloest for gift wrap ribbons, glue gun sticks--all the strange things that don't have a good home. Also works great to organize toiletries in a hotel room.

  25. This is a great idea! We did this same thing with (gasp) shoes. But it keeps them matched and off the dag-blasted floor. We hung it on the back of the back door. Now, Little Bit loves to put her shoes away and will run to choose the shoes she wants to wear as we are leaving the house. I will have to keep this idea in mind for when she's old enough for THAT many hair do-dads. Even for twins, that seems, ahem, a bit excessive. :)

    Cheers,

    Kiy

  29. Great idea. I did the same thing with Jammer's shoes since our mudroom didn't have enough space on the floor for them. I hate tripping over shoes and now I don't.

What is the Guiness Book record for most hair accessories?

    http://giorgiasenchantedgarden.blogspot.com/2008/11/accessory-organizer.html

I love it. You're looks AWESOME! We use ours all the time. I also have a mini organizer that I keep downstairs in the kitchen for quick fixes!!!

  35. I have one of these to organize the Beanie Babies that I started collecting for Megan well before she came home.

I have Megan hair stuff in one of those mini plastic drawer organizers, but she'll out grow that in no time! That's for the great idea for an upgrade!

  37. Thanks for sharing. That's a great idea and I'm going to use it for sure! I use cookie sheets for storing shoes under the changing table. They just slide under the table and we just pull them out when my daughter wants to choose her shoes for the day!

  43. Wow. I am speechless. What a great idea. Better than the piled in the bottom of the drawer method we are using now. Good show!

That is a BRILLIANT idea. It's so sad your girls don't have any hair accessories... ;0)

  47. That's how we store hair stuff too.

Now you need to add three Command adhesive hooks with ribbons on D-rings hanging from them. You then clip the barrettes on the ribbons and keep the headbands and twisties in the pockets.

  49. Wow, this is a great tip. We have ben home from China with our new 6 year old daughter for about 6 weeks, and I have been a little overwhelmed with all the hair stuff. She has tons of it, and I am not so sure what to do with it.

Which has led to her thinking I'm a lame hair fixer (which I am, with just 2 boys thus far) and not letting me anywhere near her hair.

I'm thinking if I pull out this shoe organizer trick, she might start to respect me again, pony-tail-wise?

We use the same exact thing in our downstairs coat closet for winter gloves, hats, scarves, etc... I will use a smaller one in my daughter's bedroom closet for her hair accessories- awesome!
