I guess this is a good test for how often TubaDad reads the blog

Hey TubaDad, we regret to inform you that both Ro and I had minor car accidents today. Seriously. You think I'm kidding don't you? First, I pulled out of the garage and hit my dad's car which was parked behind me. You know how our driveway slopes downhill? Well if you park a short car on the downhill side behind the van, it's virtually invisible. Who knew? Dad's car is ok, ours has some new scratches.

And then, Ro and Ree were out driving their pink car, and had to do some tricky maneuvering around another parked car to get back into their space in the garage. And, well, Ro hit the house. Really. And get this: the house is made of foam. Foam, like styrofoam. FOAM!!! What the hell?! The girls think maybe they should try to glue the pieces back together with their Elmer's Glue. Who knows, maybe they're right.

Anyhow, that's all the news for today. (So far at least.) Call me when you read this?

  1. okay so I know that the houses here in Canada are also made differently to what we were used to in South Africa but...........your house wins the prize...........styrafoam????? I think you need to call your builder, home inspector........oh and I think you all need to have some chocolate after a day of crazy driving hehehheh

Let's see only four and a car accident. Wonder what will happen when they are sixteen?

  5. Has TubaDad called? :) I think that is very minor damage for a 4-year old without the benefit of driver's ed. Was she holding a cookie at the time?

  6. !!! I would be really ticked to find out part of my house was made with foam. Did they just spray concrete on top of it? I know in FL, we had that texture too, but we had cinderblock under it.

  7. No call yet...

Hello TubaDad, are you in a very important meeting or something? Oh, and I don't think I said it in the blog post, but welcome home! Heh.

  8. Look at it this way... you now know you can use your house as a cork board, think of the pin the tail on the donkey games that can be played!

Seriously though - glad everyone is okay!!

  9. Yeah...I hit a parked car on Monday. Just filed the claim. Ouch!

  10. Ha ha! I remember when I crashed into the garage and found out OUR home is made of styrofoam blocks!

Er... sorry about BOTH accidents. I like how the scratches on your car are right next to the sensors. Tee hee.

FOAM? Well, that's a bit disconcerting. Let's hope the builders were just cutting that particular corner and no other essential protective structures. Yikes. :(

  12. I'm sorry, but I'm laughing hysterically!

Seriously, perhaps your house is cinderblock or wood with a layer of styrofoam insulation over it?

  13. Tell TubaDad that I read this in Tokyo before he got around to it :-)

I thought they used that as forms when they poured concrete. Maybe it's some fancy-schmancy anti-earthquake material? I sympathize with you on the multi-accident day. Bless your heart.

  15. Never a dull moment...

Your posts are utterly delightful. Good news, bad news, just family stuff...I love it no matter what.

  16. Ah, TubaDad has called. He didn't even sound surprised. (You have to wonder if he expects even worse out of the three of us when he leaves for work...)

I cracked up when the girls called Wela and Ree yelled into the phone "Wuyuh, Rozeeeeee cwashed into da house and it bwaked!"

That's probably a kind of concrete form wher the concrete gets poured between two layers of foam. I forget what it's called but my husband has worked on houses with that before.
I scratched our truck once years ago. I was backing out of the driveway and the fence junped over and sctratched it!

I'm no expert on home construction (by any stretch of the imagination), but I don't think you should be worried. The stuff in your photo looks like insulation to me! There is probably a much sturdier substance underneath all that foam.

Ro and Ree are just darling, as ever. ;)

  19. Glad y'all are okay and it was just some minor scratches and broken styrofoam:)

We had a similar thing happen in our driveway. It was the first day that my husband had gone to work when I was on maternity leave. I always left first and since I was home with the baby, so was the car. He really did a number on both cars....good thing for insurance:)

Hope your week gets a little better.....go grab some chocolate.....and maybe a big glass of wine when the girls go to bed!!

  20. Oops x 2. Luckily no damage to the people. Styrofoam is popular here too under stucco but I can't tell you how to fix it...sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oops....oops! I can totally understand the whole slope thing. Glad it was only a minor scratch. That foam stuff is crazy!! I've seen them do it here too when they're covering a house to look like stucco. Most of our houses are brick but some of that stucko is blown on foam and paint. I was shocked too!

Hope the insurance company goes easy on you....and Tuba Dad too. ;o)

I am curious if TubaDad ever called.

  23. So funny the way you wrote that, M3. Styrofoam? Now, that's what you call cutting corners.

  25. This is too funny. I thought they only build house with Styrofoam in Florida.. Good thing it is only a corner.

  26. You made my day!!!!!!! This day has been a weird one, and you just made it liveable! That is so crazy and I love how you tell your hubby! Smooth!

  27. Definately a good reason to hit the chocolate. Glad TubaDad was very zen about it all.

Styrofoam, eh? Does this mean Casa Salsa can float?

    Now *that* would be cool.

There is that old term grandparents like to use--"Payback time!"

When TubaDad was about two, he was outside with his dad watching him work on something or other. He found his moment when his dad was not watching him and he quietly crawled into the open door of his dad's precious Chevy Impala. While playing with the stick shift, he shifted it into neutral and it rolled into our other car which was parked at the end of the driveway. Just a little dent, but it has given us decades of laughs about that incident.

  34. Next time you go to Disneyland, they both need some drive time on the Autopia.

Love the picture of them looking at the damage. Hilarious.

Of course, now TubaDad can't get too mad since his mom ratted him out on your blog comments section. Way to go Ma!

lol, driving school for both of you!! Our house is mainly stone, but the back of it does have a covering of stucco, under which is that lovely foam... it's quite popular here but I'm not sure how that stuff will withstand Canadian winters long term!

Looks like dryvit to me which is sprayed onto the house and has a foam like interior. They've banned it in lots of areas in the U.S. because of the mold and water problems associated with it, FYI. We're working on plans for a house addition and the first thing the architect said was, "You know not to use dryvit don't you?" I've seen a lot of it in CA, so it must hold up better there than in the humid South. Love the look of it. TOO cute about Ro and Ree wanting to glue the pieces back together! You'll have to let us know when and if TubaDad gets your message. hehe I swear with all this talk about reality shows, I think the Twinadoes should have their own show! Seriously!!! Who wouldn't want to watch them in action? Plus, we'd all know where you hide the chocolate in the house! hehe You have the best blog ever. FUN family! Good luck with the repairs. I'm working on my own "repairs" today after my Sophie speared POOP ALL over her crib. Have you ever tried to clean poop out of the posts of a Jenny Lind crib? Good times, good times.....:) Melissa

You think the foam is bad. If it was a bigger hole you would see the chicken wire too, no joke.

I seem to remember your van having a back up camera and tv??

  40. So did he call yet? Foam? Seriously?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Seriously, wait until one of the kids hits your house with a real car. After my daughter's first driver's ed course, my son and I were upstairs chatting when the whole house shook. He said, "What on earth was that, an earthquake?" No, of course not. (We live in Louisiana.) I knew instantly that his sister had just driven in to the house. The bright side was that the neighbors stopped parking at the end of our driveway until she grew up and left home.

  42. Has he called yet??

  43. All stucco houses in CA are built with wood but they use the foam to form the decorative trim parts that jut out around windows, doors and the garage door, etc. It supposedly is resistant to mold. They just nail it in place (sometimes they use an industrial glue) and spray stucco over it. If you would have hit the garage harder you would have eventually hit wood. Something I'm sure you're glad you avoided!

    Go Bobby!!

    Yeah M...

What about that fancy back-up camera?

  45. Heh. When we lived not far from you in Livermore we also had a stucco house. Something bashed into a corner like that and our house too was that special styrofoam stuff under the stucco. Now we live near Seattle...no stucco thanks heavens!

  46. The styrofoam is there for isolation ;) Without it you'd be freezing in the winter or paying huge bills for heating. Underneath the styrofoam is a real wall, don't worry...haha.

    Take care, Jay
