A Nerd in the nose

Was uploading a few photos in the office when I heard TubaDad yell "M, could you come in here -- we've got a Nerd in the nose!" Um, sure? Ran into the kitchen and saw some Halloween candies sitting on the table, Ree crying frantically, and Ro jumping up and down gleefully saying "She put a Nowd in her nose, a Nowd!!"

You might think I panicked, but you know what? I had read about this a whole bunch of times on friends' blogs, and knew just what to do. I asked her which side the Nerd was on, plugged the other side, and told her to blow HARD through her nose. That little candy shot out of there like a tiny, slimy, orange rocket and bounced a few times on the ground before coming to a stop in the middle of the carpet. Yessss!

And do you know what I thought while I was hugging poor Ree and consoling her afterwards? I thought "Ha HA, see, you can learn anything on blogs!!!"

  1. Thank goodness you found out right away! I've heard of things being stuck in little noses for quite some time and it's not good!

Who knew all that blog reading would come in so handy? :)

Those little boxes of Nerds are the bane of my existence right now. I love them and Joe bought a HUGE bag for Halloween. I can't bring myself to throw them out so I've been eating them instead.

  2. Michelle, we've got about 30 of those dang little boxes left -- I'm going to send them all your way! Mwah ha ha!!

Oh, and that's the other thing I learned on blogs about noses. If your kiddo's face starts to reek, I'm talking an extremely putrid smell, that probably means something's been stuck up in the nose for a little while and you need a quick trip to the dr to remove it. Good info, huh?! :-)

  4. I'm laughing like crazy because I remember when my baby sister at about 14 months old stuck a green pea up each nostril. Too young to know how to blow, my mom managed to pierce one with a needle and pull it out, but the other required a trip to the doctor.

A bit later, the other sister tried it with a cooked macaroni.

  5. We have been lucky with SS so far. She does not place things in her mouth, nose or ears. We also know that it is just a matter of time. Good to know how to handle the situation.

Good to see Ree smiling. Ro's account just cracked me up.

  7. I guess you haven't lived if your kiddos don't put something up their nose sometime. We haven't been there yet but I'm sure our time is coming. Thanks for the warning about Nerds. We will have to ban them here.

  8. Yup...we should write a book called "everything I ever learnt I learnt in blogland" (Catchy hehe?)

Good for you for staying cool and saving the day. Glad Ree was OK.

  10. That is so true. I never knew about that, but I think it's something I will remember. Our 5 yr old might do this at some point. Good thing to know about nerds, LOL.

  11. Yeah, that should work for nerds too... When my daughter stuffed a bead up her nose, I didn't believe her because (being so young at the time) I kept thinking she was telling me that there was a BEE up her nose. I told her there was NO bee up her nose. And then she sneezed out the bead.

my sister stuck a jelly bean up her nose one time, and then stuck another one up there to "make the first one come out the other side." that was a nice trip to the ER.

  14. Mmm, purple Nerds are the BEST! I guess I should be glad that half of Casey's ended up on the floor. It's better than up the nose.

  15. That is so funny!! So glad that you got it out pretty easily:)

Now I am thinking about going through the kids candy and getting rid of the nerds. We got a lot of them this year:)

  16. Never a dull moment at your place! That's a very beautiful photo of Ree. Glad she's none the worse for wear. Whew! Good you knew what to do. I wouldn't have, and I read blogs all the time and have raised four children.

  17. FYI if you have a child too small to blow or might suck it in further, I used to triage this at the peds office I worked at but never got to try it until Maya stuck a couple differnt things up her nose and it works. Same principle, plugge the good nostril have them open there mouth and you blow it out by blowing into their mouth.

Crazy what kids get themselves into!
Love reading about the girls as we get ready to adopt in a year or two. Trying to soak up as many happy stories as possible, love yours!!

  19. Hee! Hee!
I've had to do that, too, but remove a Lego. I had to get out the tweezers to do the trick. Eww!

  20. That happened in my son's preschool class when I was there volunteering. One little boy was complaining about his nose and his nose started bleeding. We were having a holiday party so we couldn't figure out what was going on. We were all looking up it, gently feeling and examining it. He kept saying how much it hurt so finally the mom decided to leave and take him to the doctor. It was just about dismissal time anyway. So, my son and I were about to leave and he whispers to me, "I can't believe Brett stuck a buttermint in his nose." And I was like "WHAT?!?!? You knew what it was and why his nose hurt!! Why didn't you tell us??" And he said, "Mom, you always tell me not to tattle to the teacher!!" I just cringed because it was totally true.

I quickly called the mom en route to the doctor, and it wasn't fun getting that thing out for them, but at least they knew what they were looking for. And then I had to have a talk with Austin about when tattling was and wasn't appropriate. The things we learn...

I've cleaned the kids candy bags of chocolate and the only things left are non-chocolate items so I'm safe, uh, I mean their candy is safe. Unless they decide to put a Skittle in their nose. But at least I now know how to remove it! Thanks M3.
