Rocket valentines for the boys

Woohoo, we're done with the handmade Valentine gifts for the boys in class! Thank you SO MUCH for all of the suggestions. As soon as I read “fridge magnets” in the comments I knew we were in like Flynn.

I attempted to make funky monsters, then aliens, and then trucks, but my results were kind of laughable. So I took a little breather and watched some American Idol, then tackled it again. This time with various rocket shapes. Alrighty, better! Came up with a template that was pretty simple and punchy. Cut a few different variations out of felt, and voila, they turned out really cute!

Ro and Ree LOVED these little spaceships, and (unlike the heart clips where I was the sole laborer) decided they were going to help me assemble and glue Every Single Piece. Oy, be careful what you wish for. Five year olds wielding glue guns... Well let’s just say that I have a few burns and learned very quickly to hold the felt pieces with a pair of needlenose pliers.

They chatted nonstop about which boy would receive which rocket and thought these little fridge magnets were just the bomb. (That’s soy sauce on Miss Ree’s shirt, by the way, we went out for Chinese food tonight in honor of the new year):

I bought a sheet of the extra-stiff glitter felt and put a layer on the back of the rockets so they wouldn’t be floppy. And we got the roll of magnetic tape at Michael’s and adhered it with a little blast from the glue gun.

It’s kind of hard to see, but the two side rocket fins are actually one solid piece of felt (it was easier to cut and glue that way). Here are the pieces I used for the template (click the below image to open in a new window and print):

A fun note to attach to these rockets would be “I’m over the moon for you! Happy Valentine’s Day, from your friend ___.”
