In the girls’ kindergarten class, one student is chosen at random each week to be Student of the Week. Oh man, it is the BIGGEST OF BIG DEALS and that student is celebrated all week.
Ro was chosen back at the beginning of school and marched home triumphantly with the poster ALL ABOUT HER to fill out. I laid eyes on that baby and immediately had HUGE plans! We were going to work on it together, it was going to be a thing of beauty, it would have stunning lettering, perfectly placed photos, glitter accents, stickers, etc. It was going to be lovely... Luckily Ro realized my plans were crap and snuck off to the playroom to complete the poster herself. She told me later exactly which photos she wanted me to print out and I helped her glue them on. And you know what? It didn’t look anything like the other perfectly executed posters the parents helped her classmates with -- it was 100% Ro and 100% wonderful.
Well after Ro’s glory days, Ree waited for her time in the sun. And waited. And waited. And waited. For seven months she waited. Until every single other student in the class had been chosen, and finally, this week it was her turn. When Mrs. T announced that Ree was going to be the student of the week, our girl got a little teary. Not even kidding, I was volunteering that day and saw it.
Here’s her poster – all about fabulous little Ree:
She is walking on air this week. And every time TubaDad or I say something like “And what does the student of the week want for dinner?” or “Would the student of the week like to go play outside?” her eyes just light up.
Congrats to both Ro and Ree, who now have both experienced a week of school stardom.
PS: Ro’s one wish just breaks my heart. Our kitty Mango disappeared in Oct of ‘08, and the girls still sometimes roll down the car windows and call for him, just in case.

ReplyDeleteGoing to give the 30 days of posts a whirl, I've got the first 4 posted! Trying to get better about posting in our family blog instead of just food & bento.
Oh my goodness these are just precious!!!! I have to say that each yr in 1rst grade here the kids get Mr. Bear for a week. He comes with a notebook and you have to bring said bear with you EVERYWHERE and document it in the notebook with pictures too. I"ve had 2 in 1rst grade so far and both times my kids did it on their own with little help. If you saw some of those other ones that the parents did, OH MY! Same thing goes for the book reports in 1rst grade here. Parents really like to go all out. Ro and Ree's posters are PERFECT and I can't wait until they become real princesses....hehehe.
ReplyDeleteWhy do they do that with twins? One had a turn so the other can wait? Amyway they're lovely posters!
ReplyDeleteWay to go Ro and Ree!!! Can't understand why the teacher waited so long, they are twins.
ReplyDeleteI immediately saw the picture of Mango and it made me tear up too.
ReplyDeletePiper had that same poster this year! In addition to the poster, she also got to take a little bear everywhere - like Sharon described above - and document their adventures in a little notebook. AND bring her favorite healthy snacks to share with the class! What a week!
ReplyDeleteAwwww.
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain. One of my twins was Star Student during the first week of school. The other wasn't chosen for MONTHS. I felt so bad but I learned early on you can't downplay ones accomplishments just to make the other feel better. So, we make a big deal over every litte thing either of them does. That way, they know their moment to bask in our attention is coming, even if they don't get it at the same time.
ReplyDeleteYeah Ree!
ReplyDeleteThis is the hard stuff for twins. At the boys preschool, Coop got his pic taken and put up on the wall when they covered the letter C. Poor Zach is still waiting for them to get to Z.
Samatha and Woody, and 2China4s: The teacher has a popsicle stick with each child's name on it, and she pulls one out of the jar each week to assign the next student of the week, so Ro and Ree being 7 months apart was just luck of the draw.
ReplyDeleteThe Mango wish broke my heart, too, but her favorite place is the LIBRARY and her favorite thing to do is PLAY WITH HER SISTER? Fantastic kid, alright! Your girls are just lovely. :)
ReplyDeleteVery sweet Congrats to both girls. Maisie did this a few months ago and I didn't think to take a picture of hers...boohoo...I wonder if I still have it, I'll have to take a look.
ReplyDeleteOur class goes by birthday, and poor Sara had to do her poster before she could read, and she could barely write. But let me tell you, that squirt tried so hard, and while messy, it was authentically hers. ALL CHEERS to Mommies who let their kids do their own work!
ReplyDeleteI love what they want to be when they grow up. Too cute. And how lame is that she had to wait 7 months after her sister's special week. Sounds like it was worth the wait!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry about Mango. We've had 2 gray cats and 2 orange cats over the years, and guess which ones ran away? Yep, the orange ones, what's up with that?
ReplyDeleteGood job girls! Awwwww........her wish made me tear up. It's only been 7 months since our kitty ran away and I still look for her every time I pull into our carport.
ReplyDeleteYour girls are precious! I cant quite make out what Ree's favorite thing to do is, can I have a hint? ;)
ReplyDelete-jannie
Hey Jannie, Ree's fave thing to do is "play movies." Both girls are on huge movie kicks lately, and their favorite games are all ones where they dress up as movie characters and act out parts of movies. Bolt is a huge favorite right now, and the old Thumbelina, and Beauty and the Beast, and Alpha and Omega.
ReplyDeleteOh, good to hear! She is back to being best Kindergarten teacher ever!
ReplyDeleteWay to go Ree!! What fun to be student of the week!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful posters girlies!
*sniff* Ro's comment made my heart hurt.
