And now I will indulge in a little whine and wine

Yeah they’re cute and all, but don’t be fooled.DSC_9051LRDSC_9068LRDSC_9083LRDSC_9104LR

Their moods change with the wind, and apparently six is the year of DRAMA.

DSC_9073LR

Oh my word. The attitudes, the whining, the foot stomping? This is just a short phase, right? Right?!!!!

Post 29 of 31 in Oct Daily Life

PS: Yes, yes, I skipped post 28, dammit, because these two had me all verklempt and I needed to just lie on the couch with a nice glass of wine, watch some reality tv, and mutter to myself. Going to do it again tonight, actually. Am also going to amuse myself by coming up with a good term for the sixes. You know, like Terrible Twos, Trying Threes, that sort of thing. If you’ve got anything for Six, please share, I need the laugh.

  1. eye rolling .. foot stomping .. back talking .. independent little things, aren't they? Maya gets the same way ... luckily she's pretty cute, fun, and engaging 90% of the time!

is it a phase? I'm sure of it ... but I believe it will come and go many many times over the coming years, months, weeks, days .. heck, even hours sometimes!

  2. My vote is for the Sassy Sixes. My word, can little ones have the attitude!

  3. Good Lord! I thought the Sassy Sixes were just MY daughter!! It extends into the 7's by the way...

Yep, eye rolling, foot stomping (Caroline may end up with flat feet soon!), arguing ("You have something on your face." "No I don't" "It's right there." "No it isn't" GAH!!!

Don'tcha know that they don't talk to their teacher like this?

    Again...GAH!!

  4. shoot me six :) My youngest stomped her foot and pouted at me in the store once because I wouldn't buy her a diamond ring... she was SOOO not happy with a cheaper ring - HAD to be the diamond ring which only cost 1200 and some change... haha

I'm so pleased to hear you say this, because I'm so sick of the 6's as well ! The attitude, the arguing back and generally being a pain in the rear. Thought it was just my girl. It's exhausting.

  9. OK so I have a six year old in a 4 3/4's body! I have all that going on here too. Whine and wine all you want. That is what I'm going to continue to do.

  11. If it's a phase, then it lasts until htey are at least 16! My girls are 8 and 13 and if one of them is in a good mood, then chances are the other one is in a strop.

  12. I am very concerned that my child has been showing me this lovely side of her for a while. She won't be six until January. Does that mean I can expect her head to turn a full 360 degrees at some point? Sheesh!

And yes, my little darling is lucky she's cute! I'm trying to remind myself that there will be a time when I'm sad that even this is behind me!

  13. Sorry, we're at 8 over here and it's still getting worse. I may start buying my wine by the barrel...

Need to nip it in the butt as soon as possible before it gets worse! We tell them what is acceptable and what is not acceptable in this family - works most of the time - sometimes need to remind them gently and not so gently! Good luck!

Sounds like the girls are right on target for 6-year olds :)!

See if Trader Joes will keep you stocked with cases of your favorite vino.

  19. Wait... it gets *worse* at six?!! I've got a 5-yr-old who's already that way!! I don't know if I can handle it if she gets worse!!! Lord help me... :)

  20. Oh, they are just too darn cute to say anything else! Love the retro headbands (AA has two!). Wish we could meet you all; we are so jealous from way back as we wanted twins, however, as it was meant to be, we got the girl for us!!
    Love the pictures!

If they're both acting that way, it must be normal (or perhaps contagious). They really are so cute!

Seriously, try to enjoy. You might well look back on these next few years as the easiest ones.

My five year old is already there & it was in full force at Disney World this past week. We arrived at the Magic Kingdom, and I immediately was asking myself how it could be considered the happiest place on earth. Oh. My. WORD. Of course, you can't be in a bad mood there for long, thank goodness, but the DRAMA may or may not be the death of me. Hang in there!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oh no...I thought 5-7 was supposed to be easy...!!!

  25. I vote for "satanic sixes". "Sassy sixes" is just too...genteel.

    :D

It does get better. We have DRAMA about once a week now, at almost 10.

  26. I would say Sassy Sixes
    or Stormy Sixes...They are adorable!

Ladies, this is *so* reassuring. Yes, 5-7, lovely latency years and all that, that was my expectation too. But we're 7.5 over here going on 17. The eye rolling, the hand on the hip, the exasperated "Mom!" . . . Some days I'd call it sassy, some days I'd call it snotty, some days I'd call it worse. We're embarking on a regime of (constant) reminders about how we talk to/treat others in our house and repercussions (like no TV) when necessary. Also I think the only song we'll listen to in the car for awhile will be Aretha Franklin's "Respect"!

  28. Man, I thought I was the only one going through the sassy, satan stomping sixes. Too bad petulant doesn't start with an 's' because it's so appropriate. Good luck and I'll join you in the whine and the wine.

  29. Can I recomend my favorite parenting book "The Secret of Parenting"

It's all about dealing with this kind of behavior. But its not about doing certain things or punishing or rewarding to stop the behavior. Rather its about how to stop worrying about this behavior, stop engaging it and really enjoying the parenting journey. But it's not "touchy feely" at all.

  30. Yeah I would go with Sassy sixes....Though it is a name that has stuck with both me and a cousin...well into our 40's!

  31. Sassy sixes works here & applies to seven as well. My girl oldest turns 8 this week & I think it's gonna be eye rolling 8's. Oye! But I have a 6 year old girl too & their littlest sister who will be 4 in Dec. It's bad now - I can hardly imagine 10 years from now with 3 teenagers: hormones, driving & boys thrown in!!

  32. It's the sassy sixes without a doubt!

Wow, from the comments, the majority of people are going through this with 6 year olds and younger! Luckily I've only seen this with a handful of girls this age (I work with a lot of girls through scouting, church, and substitute teaching) - was taken aback and sad the first time I did witness it with a few girls. Yes, many phases are due to age, etc., but if more people start doing something about it rather than just label it a phase and hope it goes away with the next phase, hopefully this phase does not happen until they are years older or not at all. Today's girls are all growing up too fast and displaying disrespectful and thoughtless behavior at too young of an age. Some learned behavior and some because there are not a lot of people telling them it's wrong or what is right or modeling more respectful behavior. Thanks for sharing this post, Cathy

  34. Well sorry to have to tell you, but... I don't think the "Phase" goes away. My daughters are 36,35 granddaughter is 19 and great granddaughter is almost 2, so I deal with this from at least one of them each day. BUT...You do forget and you will enjoy memory they are making throughout life. I wouldn't trade any of the stuff for anything. Just pick your battles. ENJOY

  35. How about the sassy sixes? Or the saucy sixes or the spicy sixes. You could even do the salsa sixes to carry along with your blog theme.

Oh wait one more, the stomping sixes or the screaming sixes....better stop now....I am getting into a rut.

  36. How about ... Subcutaneous-Sixes ... when no matter why the kids are doing it just get under your skin ?

  37. Love it! We're all going through the same thing here in the Midwest. Even the best behaved girls in Sara's class are doing it. We thought for a while that maybe a few were being a bad example, but we soon learned it was an age thing. I like Sassy Six...because they are SO SASSY. I tell Sara, "Sassy isn't classy young lady." Good luck!

  38. I can definitely relate with our little 6 year old girl! On a side note.... where did you get the girls headbands, I love them!!
