A cute (EASY) Halloween lunch

I made jack-o’-lantern PBJs for the girls’ lunches yesterday and was pretty happy with the way they turned out. Well Ro and Ree not only liked the themed lunches, but said that since it’s the day before Halloween they wanted even MORE Halloweeny stuff in their lunches today (then they giggled and squealed and ran out of the room).

So this is what I came up with over breakfast this morn:

Pretty Halloweeny, right?

They’ve each got a fruit bar cut in half and colored with a ghost face, a cutie orange jack-o’-lantern, 4 pieces of tortilla cut in a pumpkin shape with cheese in between each layer (I cut out a jack-o’-lantern face on the first layer and microwaved the stack for 10 seconds to melt the cheese a bit and make it stick together), some candy corn, and a Halloween joke (there are six to choose from, printed from here).

Whew. They were so happy with these lunches. Anyone got any good ideas for tomorrow?

  2. I have no ideas to offer.
Instead I have a question... can I come over to eat at YOUR house?

  3. For their treat, you could always go with the Kleenx ghost lollipop.

  4. Darling lunch ideas! PS. I came home early from work and I've got your pumpkin dump cake in the oven right now. The WHOLE house smells delicious.

  5. I'm amazed that is all your kids eat for lunch! Lucky you... I feel like I'm just shoveling food at them around here and the cute factor gets lost in the quantity!

We joke that my kids are hobbits and must have 1st breakfast, second breakfast, brunch, lunch, etc. (My 5 year old usually gets two full sized sandwiches in his lunchbox for example.) This would be a great snack for my crew but I guarantee they would be asking for food again in about 10 minuets!

  6. How about cutting the pumpkin shapes out of their favorite bread and filling with tuna salad or just salami and cheese? then put a note on top of the lunch that says, "Boo"!

  7. What a great lunch idea! Love the theme and your ideas for what to put into their lunch. Hannah will begin taking lunches next year and I'll be scouring the net for interesting things to feed her. Off to pin this one! :o) Way to go friend!

I made little vampire teeth out of carrots and stuck them into apple slices for the boyz lunches. They both cracked up. I'm so glad they aren't too big to enjoy my crazy ideas.

  9. I wanted to say thanks for the idea...I made these jack-o-lanterns today for my 3 kiddos. Instead of a little orange they had a mandarin fruit cup with a face I'd drawn on with a sharpie. A fun lunch for h'ween.

  10. And for the first day of November....a fall leaf to cut out their sandwiches, some nuts, cranberries, and a sliced peppers in an array of color!!! Or, take a break since you've done some fantastic Halloween lunches these past few days. I put a pumpkin shaped Snickers in my 12 yr. olds lunch today and called it good! You impress me!!!

  11. Thank you so so so much for the orange jack-o-lantern idea! I had no idea that we were supposed to bring treats to preschool today until an hour before class. We went to the grocery, grabbed a bag of little oranges, and I made faces on them while the kids ate Subway sandwiches.

I did have a problem with the Sharpies on the oranges. After making about 5 of them, the Sharpie wasn't working as well. I have a feeling the orange peel might be coated with a little wax to keep them pretty, and the sharpie was getting wax on it. Any ideas on how to keep the sharpie working well?

    1. Hi Sarah! Hope your cuties enjoyed Halloween, our girls had a ball. I washed the fruit first with warm water and dish soap (we have Dawn, although I don't know if that matters) and a veggie scrubber. They still had a little residual wax I think, because I went through a few Sharpies, but the pens worked much better that way. I also used every part of the pens -- starting with the tips, rotating a lot, using the bottom parts by holding the pens really angled, that sort of thing.
