We met our sweeties on this very day six years ago.
I was holding Ro in this first family photo, and TubaDad was holding Ree. But we had originally planned it the other way around. It was just that when the nannies walked in holding the girls, Ree was wide awake and quite agitated looked, while Ro was snoozing away. And I panicked, grabbed TubaDad’s arm and frantically yelled “Switch!! SWITCH!” Seriously.
It all worked out in the end. This photo was taken back at the hotel room (I think the next day). TubaDad is holding Ree again, and I’m holding Ro, although we had conscientiously switched quite a few times by this point:
The girls were hilarious, right from the beginning, cracking us up and themselves over and over. In these first pics, you can see the bracelets that we blindly put on the girls at that first meeting – the fact that Ro’s is on the right and Ree’s on the left was pure luck. And notice that Ro is shoving Ree’s head down and cackling in the last one:
The first night was ROUGH. And the next morning, after maybe 45 minutes of sleep (or so, and not in a row), I was in tears when I realized that the extremely organized and important To Do list I had scrawled in the darkened hotel room was completely illegible. In my delirium, I had written each line on top of the last. Ugh. Seems funny now, and I’m sure my parents were dying laughing when they snapped this pic, but I was bawling that morning:
Little cuties. Ro had stolen Ree’s sock here:
Ree was visibly gloating to have the sock back:
But I imagine Ro here to be thinking “Yeah sister, but I had it first”:
Our hotel room (and come to think of it our house) was a wreck from the minute we met the girls:
But we didn’t care:
We were kind of a spectacle wherever we went. Hordes of people wanted to see the girls, and everybody thought they were so cute:
Especially the grandparent paparazzi team that we brought with us:
Whew. It’s been a crazy wonderful six years Ro and Ree. Happy family day. Glad you enjoyed our celebratory dinner tonight where (as Ree put it) “Mama, I can’t believe the whole meal we got to dip stuff in stuff!!”
PS: I don’t think I’ve posted most of these photos before because frankly I didn’t blog much during that China trip after the girls came along. I do remember that the blog and my email were getting hammered and my dad finally logged in and posted that one first family pic and said we were all ok. Going from no kids to twins was just insane...
my, dare i say… you both look so YOUNG in the china pics??!!! bwaahahah!
ReplyDeleteAwwwww!! Happy Family Day!! I just love this post!!!

ReplyDeleteHappy Family Day.
Happy, happy family day. I remember those early pictures. I know those first moments are ones that you'll never forget.
ReplyDeleteI teared up looking at the pictures! I'm so glad no one took a picture of me Day 1. My Mother-In-Law flew in to help, and when she got to the house I was lying on my bed crying my eyes out, Sara was lying next to me, crying her eyes out, and my college roomie was on the phone chanting, "If they cryin', they ain't dyin'! (lesson from our Pediatric rotation).
ReplyDeleteHee!!! That is an EXCELLENT chant, and one which I shall promptly adopt.
DeleteThese are wonderful pics. ALL of you look very different from the first picture and aside from the one photo of you recovering from a crying spell all of you typically have big smiles on your faces. Who is who in the photo of the girls in front of the restaurant? I cannot tell them apart.
ReplyDeleteRee is on the left and Ro on the right in that one.
DeleteOh sweetie - what a day!!! Love seeing the pics and hearing your stories. Heh...no posting? Oh yah - I remember! I think I was responsible for at least 1000 hits on your blog! :o)
