Haiti relief efforts

Two things: TubaDad just sent this link over and I thought it was worth sharing. It's a CNN story titled Haitian orphans rushed to new homes abroad, and tells what the US and Netherlands are doing to expedite in-progress adoptions in Haiti. It's one thing. The other thing involves donations. If you can donate to Haiti earthquake relief efforts, but don't know where to begin, here are two places to start: 1. Official suggestions: CNN is airing a special two-hour edition of Larry King Live tonight (5pm Pacific time, 8pm Eastern time) that will talk about immediate things you can do to aid earthquake victims. 2. A personal suggestion: Braydon and Heather, at the blog Party of Five, have done a lot of research on this (they are dang smart people who I trust and who adopted exuberant twin boys from Haiti five years ago), and they recommend donating to Heartline Ministries where they say "we know for sure that your money will go fully and wholly straight where it is needed." Click here to donate to Heartline's Haiti earthquake relief efforts. Anyhow, I'm just posting this in case anyone wants to help earthquake victims but is unsure of what to do. I know that TubaDad and I get kind of paralyzed when this type of tragedy strikes. We want to help, and we can, but sometimes we don't even know where to start.

Thank you M3 for posting this. Since the quake, we have been wandering around asking, "who do we donate to?" We also get kind of dazed and I have heard some negative things about some of the big charities during my research.

I will check out the charity you listed, thanks for listing that. I also wanted to throw out there that Doctors Without Borders is also a great organization. Thanks again for this most important posting.

  2. I watched the clips and it breaks my heart. I just want to bring them all home with me. I'm really not sure how that couple kept it together talking to the reporters.

We've donated in the UK through Oxfam... I trust them that they will use the money appropriately.

  3. Thought you might like to know that CCAI has a relief fund going right now, too. That's where I ended up donating.

  5. Sorry... I should have added that World Vision is another excellent NGO. They have been working in Haiti and have staff on ground at all times.

I know this because I worked for World Vision for 10 years. Just a suggestion.

  6. We too are like you guys, we just sit paralyzed until one of us just goes. Thanks for posting this. I wish we could stop in Haiti for a few weeks before we go to China. Sigh.

Hi M3, I agree, I was paralized too.

One of the missionary families in my church, their gdaughter flew over today to help with women's health issues at the border. Which she said is where most people go that can travel.

We donated to her trip and my little church of 65 members collected $805 on sunday. Amazing !!

Blessings on you and TubaDad for all you do.

I can only imagine the psychological disaster of just "shipping" a Haitian orphan to the US. The majority of people are simply not psychologically equipped to bring into their home a young child abandoned under these circumstances, regardless of how well-intended an adoption may be. I would rather see money sent to build an infrastructure to help these young children in their homeland.

    M3,

This comment is related to an earlier post when you talked about your girls being interested in Grey's Anatomy and pretending to be doctors. I don't know if you know about the blog "Thingamababy", but if you don't it might be worth checking out. On the blog the author showed a doll called "Erwin" and his is a child-appropriate patient where kids can do surgery. I thought it was a unique toy and the author commented on how his daughter (maybe a little older than Ro and Ree) liked it. He included lots of photos. I don't know you outside of your blog, so if I am completely off base here, I apologize. When I saw it, though, I thought about your girls. Check it out at:http://www.thingamababy.com/baby/2010/01/surgicaldoll.html#more-6042

And, if you like it, leave me a comment at http://howdoyoumeasureayear.blogspot.com

I just want to say that I second the opinion of donating to Heartline Ministries. We know of a local family who has been working with Heartine and have been living in Haiti for the past few years running 2 orphanages. I know they will use the donations in the best possible manner.

  12. Anon,

The children currently being brought to the US (and other countries) are those who have waiting families. Steps are being taken to cut through the red tape of adoptions that were in process prior to the earthquake.

These are children that had already been matched with their forever family.

I am glad to hear the girls thought Erwin was cool. I guess you'd better buy two!

  14. Hey there, did you know CCAI has been doing Haiti adoptions for over a year. If not, go to the CCAI website and click on the Haiti link to the website. Josh went to Haiti to deliver needed items to the creche. It has been so rough for all in Haiti, especially the creche, this past week.
