Chinese-themed birthday party

The girls’ sixth birthday is about a month and a half away (yipes), so I guess it’s time to start thinking about that party... Ro and Ree want to do a “Chinese-themed” birthday party with Mulan touches. They’re fascinated by everything having to do with China right now and spend hours and hours poring over every single Chinese book, map, and photograph we own. Plus, Mulan completely holds their hearts – seriously, Mulan is the main squeeze these days, no other princesses need apply. So I booked a Mulan performer for our day and whiled away some time looking on the web and Pinterest to find all sorts of partylicious ideas.

I saw darling Chinese parties done in red, white, light pink, and dark pink, but I think we’re going to have the girls pick their fave fabric in Chinatown (San Fran) and then let that dictate the party colors:

I’ll bet that same trip to Chinatown will yield plenty of beautiful and inexpensive lanterns, fans, umbrellas, and other decorations:
Chinese lanternsChinese umbrellas.Chinese tea tins are both beautiful and inexpensive.

There were a bunch of cute game ideas that would be entertaining -- chopstick and pom-pom races, decorate your own fortune cookie stations, or Chinese jump rope:
Chopstick/pompom relay party gameDecorate your own fortune cookie activity (slip finished cookies into goodie bags afterwards)

For a mid-afternoon party, wouldn’t appetizers and some kind of fun kiddo drink served in adorable mini-teacups like these be great?:

I love the idea of using red lunch bags adorned with stickers or stamps for treat bags, and I’ll bet the girls would enjoy decorating these and picking out goodies to put inside:

No actual work has been done yet, of course (unless that heavy mouse-clicking counts), but browsing creative ideas online sure makes party-planning exciting! If anyone wants to keep an eye on our party progress (or any other things we’re planning), you can click this button to subscribe to my boards:  Follow Me on Pinterest  The board for the sixth bday is called “Chinese Party.” Oh, and if you’d like an invite to Pinterest, please leave your email in the comments section.

If you have any other ideas for our Chinese party – food, decorations, games, you name it -- please share!!

PS: While you’re clicking around, check out my review of OnStar’s new FMV mirror!

  1. OK, so awesome theme. SO GREAT! Mulan is my favorite, and no amount of begging has convinced the girls to join me. I would love a pininterest invite. I think it's time I get on board with this cool site. Not sure if I need to do anything?

  28. Usually back in China, people give out red color-dyed eggs to guests on the baby's first full month into the world but its still a tradition for red dyed eggs to be present at birthdays. (I have kiddie bday party pics of myself w/ red eggs on the tables!)

Just google "chinese red eggs" to get a better idea of the tradition.
    :)

    P.S. Mulan is waaaay cool!

  29. Cool! We did a Chinese themed party for my daughter when she turned 12. It was just days before we went to China to get Maylin.

For a craft, we decorated chop sticks with seaquins and jewels (attached with glue) the girls made them to put in their hair when they did buns or just fancy eating utincels. They loved them.

Your party sounds fabulous! Great ideas. You always do wonderful things.

  34. I heart BIG TIME Pinterest. The best!! Easy to use and great organizing tool.

I love the theme the girls chose. Miss D is really starting to like Mulan. I bot her a second hand book one day by chance, and now she wants to read it all the time. Will try the movie soon.

We watched our home movies of China and Miss D was really into them and kept repeating China and Mommy and Daddy in China. First step...

    Keep smilin!

You can make fortune cookies with your own clever fortunes inside. Not at the party, but before the party, and put them in the favor bags. I did it once as a kid and it wasn't that hard.

The Disney Store outlet had Mulan T=shirts & pink nightgowns. I bought some a couple of weeks ago. Oriental Trading has some simple craft kits for Chinese New Year. A chop stick candy race is fun. The kids have to carry the candy in a rubber banded chopstick to the finish line. You could do something with the Zodiac Animals. Pin the tale on the rabbit etc.
Looking forward to seeing your photo's.

  49. Fabulous idea! We actually tossed around the idea for this year's party, but decided to wait until they geta little older. In researching though, I had read about a game that the kids did with the zodiac signs and a letter game spelling out the words Happy Birthday in chinese. Here is the link, http://www.birthdaypartyideas.com/html/chinese_parties_1.html.

  53. I have to tell you the funniest thing...when Faith came home from China...she said she had never eaten or even seen a fortune cookie - and she lived with a foster family that took her out to restaurants etc. too, so I don't know what the deal was. My husband and were laughing at how in America we think those cookies are symbolic chinese and they probably don't even eat them there?? LOL.

I know you'll have an amazing party with your fun girls!! :)

  65. I went to a Kai Lan themed b-day party and they had colored fortune cookies purchased online--they were also flavored by color. They also made kid sushi by making rice krsipie squares cut with rounded edges. The edges were then rolled with red fruit roll ups. A Swedish fish was attached with frosting to the top. They were so cute!
