An apple a day...

The girls are serious about their fruit. They've never met a fruit they didn't like, and would eat it all day long, to the exclusion of any other food, if we'd let them. We don't. But we're not above using it as an enticing bribe, such as "if you eat that horrible dry, boring chicken your mama attempted to cook you get to have some FRUIT!" Whooee, works every time. This afternoon Ro and Ree were sitting on the arms of the kitchen chairs (am I the only one who can't stand that?!), just chatting away and tearing into some Fuji apples in the fruit bowl. By the way, they like to eat a few bites out of an apple, set it aside, then reach for a new one, and so on and so on until the table is littered with partially nibbled apples. I'm not really fond of that technique, much to their chagrin, and force the poor little darlings to eat one apple at a time. Yeah I'm picky like that. Anyhow, they were sitting at the table munching away, and I took the opportunity to try out the new macro lens on them. I didn't take the time to wipe off (or photoshop off) the days' accumulation of facial dirt, apple bits, and whatnot, but I think that just adds to their charm, right? The first 5 pics are of Ree (who was pretty funny posing between bites), the last 4 are of Ro. Ree Ree Ree Ree Ree Ro Ro Ro Ro Now I kinda have a craving for apple, so I might have to tiptoe downstairs and grab one while everyone else is sleeping. Hope I don't get a pre-nibbled one. PS: If anyone's curious, these pics were taken with Nikon D300, AF-S micro 105mm 2.8 lens, aperture priority, f/5, 1/50s, center-weighted metering.

  1. The pictures are AWESOME!! That Macro lens rocks.......I cannot believe how crystal clear and detailed those pictures were. Not to mention how cute Ro and Ree look in every single one!! And yes....as I sit here with my coffee, I am not hungry for an apple:)

Sarah does the same thing taking bites and moving on to the next apple.....it drives me NUTS!!

Hope you all have a great weekend!

  4. You do like that new lens, don't you? The pictures are awesome.

But how did you get far enough away and still have control over the action? And not have them follow you? That's my biggest problem with the longer lenses (actually, I already have that with the 50mm)

Fruit is good - ours go back and forth between eating TONS and then not wanting much for a few days...

Pi feels the same about fruit and we do the same, ahem, bribe - "if you eat two more bites of (insert meat or sandwich here), you can have grapes for dessert!"

I've long said that if she could get a federal grant to study whether children can live on fruit alone, she would.

Love the ruby red "apple lips!" That lens is amazing.

  6. D2: Thanks! It is a fun lens. For these pics the girls were sitting on kitchen chairs and I was about 20 inches from them with my arms leaning on the table. They were busy eating so they weren't moving all over the place like they normally do. I got some neat shots yesterday outside too that I'll try to post later. It was kind of fun to use the lens for things outside the normal "macro" category.

  8. And I thought I was the only Mom who actually has to make "fruit runs" to the grocery store. I don't know how a Midwestern farm girl produced two vegan daughters, but at least I'm getting more Vitamin C these days.

Loving the sandbox pictures. My girls would have thought of the same thing. Again, relieved I'm not the only Mom who has to stop laundry to document unreal messes and adventures!

  10. One of my three liked to eat apples using the same snack and scram method then come back for a new one. No one else in the house was happy because there were rarely apples without bites out of them. One day I decided to show her how the job should look when done properly and ate my apple down to the core, then I told her that if it didn't look like mine she was NOT ALLOWED to take a new one. HA HA HA in one ear and out the next!!! So I then put all the apples away except for her chomped one, this did not make her real happy and it was a struggle but eventually she learned to eat them properly. Desert (ice-cream) was the best 'eat your dinner' bribe at our house. Love the pictures. What's the secret to telling your little china dolls apart?

  12. Love the pictures. THe open mouth-see-my-food picture is my favorite. Hey, you are pretty lucky to have fruit as a bribing tool. I have a son that will not budge unless the bride involves gobstoppers or fun dips.

  13. Beautiful pics! Love all the details that you've captured here...both of their physical features and also their precious individual personalities!

Mmm...off to eat an apple but I think I'll have mine with chocolate, or caramel...or both!

  14. Why do I have to bribe my children to eat fruit? And chicken? All the bribing in the world won't work for that!

  15. Well I was looking at your camera equipment and it looks like you will need a 85 1.4mm, an overall awesome lens the 17-55 2.8, or the totally awesome 70-200mm. All weigh a ton so you might need a bag with wheels. 8-)

I would never have thought it, but I *can* tell the little ones apart now. Their personas are so different. And apple bits are the new glitter!

  19. Hi, we have an apple fetish in our house too. I realized the other day that we go through about 4 apples a day. That's alot for three people! My son loves them. I cut them up for snacks or as a side for his meals. My husband and I have a fruit bowl every night in bed, it always includes a sliced apple!
