They fell into bed tonight without a peep

Big day for the little girls (and the big girls too). We piled into the van and went to the Monterey FCC New Year's party, then decided to go look at all the purdy trees beaches and houses on 17-mile drive, realized we were on an accidental road trip without proper food and remedied the problem with a quick stop at the Pebble Beach Golf Links market, played on the freezing-cold beach, took a whole bunch of pics (naturally), went to Asilomar, and stopped in downtown Monterey for some shrimp cocktails (four, actually, and I think Ro ate most of them).

A few highlights:

Road trip food: The girls are total pros at picking roadtrip food by now and I think they might have shocked Catherine with their expertise and speed. Between the four of us we got candy-coated Hershey kisses, red vines, mint milanos, cheddar popcorn, cheese sticks, potato chips, beef jerky, caramel corn with pecans, animal crackers, coffee (ok this one was for Cafrin and I).

Favorite quote of the day: Catherine was giving some of the mind-blowingly spicy beef jerky to Ro and I said "What do you say Ro?" expecting a thank you, and she replied "Holy moly!" Heh.

Favorite bathroom (we see a lot of them these days): the Pebble Beach golf course one.

Amount of napping that took place: Zip, zero, zilch. I can't believe that after staying up to 10pm last night they completely skipped nap today. Catherine and I even cranked the car heater up to 75 and they just chattered away. At one point Ree told a 12-minute story (that kid can talk) which involved a lot of sick animals, buckets, and bandaids. Whew.

Minutes the girls stayed awake after going to bed: Zip, zero, zilch. I think we might have broken them. I actually checked the baby monitors to see if I could hear breathing (I could). The best pics from the day:

(View thumbnails, detail, or slideshow) I think I'll go join the girls in slumberland now...

Well, at least they crashed hard at the end of the day. Hopefully you got *your* sleep as a result!

  4. Looks like you had a grand and tummy filling day. Holy Moly on the amount of snacks there. You totally know how to do it right. I think that the beach is great, even though they had to be in coats....we woke up to snow today. Dang! It had just melted.

I can't decide what I think is cuter:
The little tippy-side red shoe in the party photo, or the stylin' green rocker shades in the car.

I don't need to tell you to 'Have fun!', because clearly you are!

  8. I just read your comments about being a fun mom vs. good mom and I am working on that too. Its hard to always remain chill in the constant chaos and noise kids bring-I also take mini time outs to breath.
    Thanks for you honesty!

What kind of food do they like other than junk food?

  12. Whao! Riding with you would be a blast for Emma since eating in the car is a big No-No for her.
Have a great time with your friend!

  14. whoa, that's a whole lot of junk food. i think you are a GREAT mom, but i was thinking with all the scares with trans fats and mercury and high fructose corn syrup that you might be eating a wee bit healthier around your house...

totally not my business and feel free not to post this comment... just seems like you all eat a ton of junk food. (like me, but my good habits are already ruined and you have the opportunity to instill healthy ones with impressionable minds)

    love your blog!
