Day 3: I think I severed my tongue

Alrighty, day 3 of the fashion challenge, and the girls tried to make me cry uncle with their outfit selection process. But I'm proud to say that I bit my tongue and didn't say a dang word as they handed me their somewhat questionable choices. The lengthy outfit assembly took place last night, right before bedtime. Ree was first to make her selections, as usual, but had some difficulty choosing today's outfit. First she picked a new blue peasant t-shirt (I was excited at this choice as it still has the tags on it), then dismissed it and picked a fun pink cordoruy dress, then jammed the dress back on the rack and swapped it for a graphic pink t-shirt, then sort of sighed in exasperation and put that back too. She stood in the middle of the closet for a bit, frowning and looking around, then pounced on a custom brown Etsy pillowcase dress. That started the ball rolling, and she quickly grabbed some electric blue striped pants with attached skirt (I might have let out a little whine at this point), then my favorite brown sock-monkey shirt for underneath (I looked away so she wouldn't see me wince). She happily flounced away and it was sister's turn. Ro briefly surveyed the closet, said "Ummm, I think pink" (shocker, eh?), and went right to her favorite section (the closet is organized by color). She ran a finger over one or two shirts and immediately seized on the pink tie-died winner, then rooted around for a long-sleeve shirt to wear underneath. She found a fuschia one with ruffled shoulders and flared cuffs (eep!) and handed it to me, then picked a summer skirt that she said matched it. She was halfway to the bin of tights when she spied Ree's outfit on the floor and yelled "Mama! Ree wear a skirt and pants?!" When I replied that it was true, she did an aboutface, marched straight to the pants rack and grabbed the pink/orange striped ones saying "Now I match Ree!" Oh gosh, honey, that is just great. Anyhow, when TubaDad got home late last night I told him to prepare for a trainwreck on Day 3. He checked out the outfits, raised an eyebrow, and said laconically "I'll bet Ree will change her mind." No way. Won't happen. Nope. Never. That rowdy outfit was going to preschool, I just knew it... Damn if he wasn't right. Ree woke up this morning, glanced at her wild outfit, complete with etsy dress and sock monkey shirt, and said "Dat not my shirt." Then she ran to the closet and came out with a light pink polka-dotted tee, a bright green and purple jacket, and a big saucy grin. That little minx was just toying with me last night -- I'm certain of it!! Day 3 Day 3 Day 3 of the fashion experiment Well they were playing with me last night, but, in the end, the girls did pretty well for Day 3 of the fashion challenge. Has anyone else noticed that Ro has been in pink every day so far and Ree hasn't picked one single blasted yellow thing, even though the closet is now stuffed with the sunshiney items she claims to love? Contrary, I tell you, she's contrary! (Everyone in my family is probably nodding their heads right now and saying "Yep, just like her mama.") By the way, I might hide those froggie boots tomorrow -- I'm tired of seeing them leering at me in photos. Heh. ~~~~~~~~ Update, at the end of the day: Thought it might be interesting to show you what the girls look like by the end of the day. It's a pretty typical day, and, as usual, they have played hard. Day 3: end of the day

  5. I think they did great once again. It's pretty impressive really, that they can get some of the colors and the layering right. I'm impressed, I have to say.

  6. i have to say, i like their fashion sense-- cute with a whole lot of funk! but i totally hear you on the wincing when they pick out their outfits. i let my 5 yo pick her clothes and i do have to physically hold my mouth shut. i'm still somewhat of a control freak with my 3 yo:)
ps-- you writing style just cracked me up!

  7. I think Ree had a great combination with the brown but if she was planning to wear it with the blue skirt then “no”. After seeing yesterday and today's clothes I think Ro is more “Safe” side and Re is more “Risky." I see Ree being a clothes designer. She looks like she is not matching but if you look closely she actually is (including her green rain boots! great job)
I really hope you are taking video of them picking out their outfits. Just to hear them say “no, yes, that doesn’t match” would be cute to hear. One more thing, why don’t you try hiding most of the pink clothes from Ro’s closet? See what she comes up with just tell her that you are washing them if she asks for a specific blouse or skirt. I really can’t believe that Ree hasn’t picked any yellow, she might be saving it for the last day so don’t put away your sunglasses yet.

I'm all for giving children at every age choice and am always delighted when I see young children asserting their preferences. Some moms love to dress their kids that remind me of playing dolls and other moms just make sure the clothes are clean and give children lots of latitude. I love to see the creativity that goes into the latter. Kids feel so dang good about themselves when they can make their selections. I bet Ree and Ro loved strutting their attire around the house and out in public. Bravo to the 3-year olds!

I love the girls' picks - they are so colourful and adorable! My 4 year old always picks her outfits - as long as they're weather appropriate, I let her. On the rare occasion that she deserves a time out, in our house, it becomes a "mommy gets to pick your outfit tomorrow" thing which is the worst punishment in her mind! Can't wait to see what the girls come up with next!

  14. I have been a lurker for some time. Seeing the cute outfits your girls have picked out, I might have to let go of my inner control freak and let my little Gansu princess pick out her ensemble for tomorrow. I have enjoyed the pictures.

  15. LOL!!! I love this! My 3.5yo has been picking her own clothes for 6 months or so, I think, now. Mommy does get to pick (or at least guide a little bit) if we're going out in public, but otherwise, she's on her own. She knows what clothes are in what drawer, and she gets herself dressed. Some of Ro and Ree's outfits look very familiar, lol - my dd loves the layered look, too, I don't know where she figured that out from! Most days she's wearing some kind of little play dress, over pants, with a sweater on top. :)

  18. Well, I think you're a great mom. Those girls are too precious for words. I enjoy reading about Wela and Bob Bob. I think all of you are parenting pros.

  19. I think it fun that they still go for similar but different things. Each day they seem to have their own style yet still match! Very cute and very fun!

I think you need to write a parenting book.....you are good, really good.....I always love hearing what you all are up to and what you are teaching your girls in such a fun way!!

    Can't wait for day 4!

  21. Ok, this has been my favorite set of posts to date! I LOVE LOVE LOVE looking in to see what they'll choose! I won't lie...my twins are not far enough through fashion rehab for me to turn over the reigns to them just yet!

But I'm going to ask it (haven't read the other comments to see if anyone else has asked) but I am, frankly...DYING to see their closet! Can we see a picture or tour of it? I mean, come one...Organized? By color? Holy cow...I HAVE TO HAVE TO HAVE TO see it. Seriously. Please? Pretty please? With chocolate on top? OK, sheesh, I'm begging, but it's worth it. I just want to oogle the closet and sigh and say, "one day...I'll be that organized. Like, when the girls have moved out!"

Tons of fun! Thanks for sharing!

  22. LOL! Each day I see those froggie boots I feel slightly guilty that their pink kitten cousins are upstairs in Hannah's closet. Shhhhh....don't tell the girls. Maybe they forgot (as if!) and we can still be friends!

They seem to be getting more and more adventurous each day. Wonder what tomorrow holds?

Heh...the whole yellow thing makes me laugh!

I really adore these girls. I just stumbled upon your blog and from then on have been checking on our postings. Your girls remind me of my little Maggie, she's about to turn 1 and believe me when I say that Ree looks like her. I think I just had a glimpse of Maggie's future through Ree!

  24. I am loving all this fashion fun. I can't wait until it is my turn to let my little sweetie have a turn at this game. Her big brother might also just have to get his own versionbut I'm betting it won't be nearly as interesting or colorful.

  26. They are so cute! I see a future in fashion! Keep up the good job, girls!

  27. the little 3 year old monkey i nanny for will not let anyone pick out her clothes. she has to do it herself. needless to say, the outfits she chooses are um, interesting. my favorite one was a red sweaterlike dress with hello kitty on it, pink ruffly skirt underneath it, pink ugg boots, zip up pastel knitted sweater with a mountain scene on it, pastel striped beanie with a huge pom on top of it. boho chic at it's finest!

usually we have a eye piercing combo of stripes and polka dots and flowers. and don't even get me started on how she wants her hair done. let's just say she usually comes out with 1-5 random hair accessories and wants them all used in the 'do.

  28. I'm SO SO SO SO grateful that Malka has NO clue that she actually has a choice in her wardrobe! hahahahaha! :)
Granted, she's a pooter in other areas, so maybe it all evens out. I give her what she'll wear, and one in a blue moon she'll make another choice. But it's all good.

I think the girls look ADORABLE!

I have been behind on reading your blog and was just getting caught up when I saw the picture of Ro with her pants hiked up like shorts. I looked at my husband and said, "Who does this remind you of?" Our daughter does exactly the same thing - she's very big on having her "knees show" and her "arms out" (short sleeves).

So happy we're not the only ones experiencing the fashion opinions of a three-year-old these days. Thanks for sharing!
