I'm not the only forty-something person watching American Idol, am I?
Haven't written about American Idol yet this season, but I'm watching. Oh yes. I'm utterly and unabashedly addicted to trashy reality tv. Mmmmm. A few notes on tonight's performance (written in real-time, as the show is rolling):
Ryan: Like his outfit tonight. Very snappy. I'm getting TubaDad one of those polka-dot ties for Father's Day.
Quentin Tarantino: Wow. Cool.
Allison: She's one of my two favorites this season. Love her. Really. But... didn't really love this performance. Not sure why. Maybe the song is just too tied to Tyler's voice? I kind of like it better when she takes a normal or plain song and "Allifies" it. Anyhow, she still gets my vote.
Anoop: Nice singing. He sounded good. And I'm really glad he made it to the top 10 and will go on the AI tour, because he's personable and likable and all that. But there is no way he'll make it to the end. No way.
At this point in the show I got annoyed that we only get to hear two judges talk about each singer. Because, frankly, I want to hear from Paula (comedic) and Simon (always right) every time and don't care what Randy or Kara think.
Adam: Whoohoooooo! If he isn't in the finals, I'll give up chocolate for a month. The boy has talent. And he's riveting. I thought last week's performance was better than this one (it would be hard to top last week's in my opinion). But damn! Oh goodie, we get to hear Paula and Simon on this one.
Matt: Yawners. This dude is just boring to me. Actually had to pause and rewind because I spaced out and started reading email. Oops. What is he singing? Eh. Back to e-mail for a few minutes.
Danny: Is Quentin really tall or is Danny really short? Hate this Endless Love song, by the way. Curious to see what he does with it. Hm... Didn't love it, the last half was better than the first, though. Seemed like he was gulping for air during it, and maybe struggling for the lyrics or his gestures or something? Anyhow, I like him, he seems really genuine and a truly nice guy. And he's got a nice voice, but I don't think I'd fork over a bunch of money to see him in concert or anything.
Chris: Wow, Quentin is WAY taller than he is. He's cute, in a puppyish kind of way. Sort of wholesome. Singing sounded good tonight, I thought.
Lil: Wow, she looks great... but (Oops, now I'm giving out the back-handed Paula compliment.) Whoever is styling her seems to do better and better each week. I thought she sounded great in the very beginning of the season, and was really rooting for her. But the last three or so songs have just been okay for me. Not bad, but nothing to make my heart thrill (or, more importantly, to make my dialing fingers leap to action).
Alright, off to go vote for Allison and Adam. Then it's off to bed. TubaDad's playing a symphony tonight, so he'll get home sometime around 1am. Eeesh. He's not going to get enough sleep tonight and he missed American Idol. Poor guy.

Check out Quentin's shoes. He was wearing MBTs and they probably add a good inch to inch and a half http://www.swissmasaius.com/Default.aspx?lang=en-US
ReplyDeleteThis season has been really good with a larger group of talent.
How about instead of a tie like Ryan's, you get Tubadad some pants like Adams?
Keri
OMGosh Keri, I actually stared at his shoes at one point in the show and wondered what the heck they were. I thought they were some kind of special corrective shoes or something and maybe he had a medical condition.
ReplyDeleteAI is the only show my husband and I watch together... We live for the Idol season (well, not really, but kinda... you get my drift)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Allison, she rocks, and Adam... well, he rocks AND he's a showman :)
No, I watch it, too. I like this season a lot. I find Kris and Matt totally boring. I don't like not hearing all four (would rather them go back to the original three) judges.
ReplyDeleteI think Adam is incredible. I agreed with Simon that the vocals were great, but last week's was the best. I had last week's show on DVR and watched the performance about 10 times.
I think Allison is great -- such an incredible voice for a 16 year old.
oops, forgot to sign my name to previous entry...

47 next week.....LOVE Idol and a multitude of other cheesy reality, much to my husbands dismay (especially if I have "Housewives" on !). I just have a feeling that Allison will be voted off tonight but that they will save her.
ReplyDeleteI watch it with my 10 year old. Amazing Race and American Idol mean I get to cuddle up with him on the couch while we eat popcorn and watch TV...I'd watch even if I couldn't stand the show just for the cuddles which are getting fewer and fewer!lol

I heart Adam!
ReplyDeleteI'm watching, and I admit it, although I still have a little over 3 years before I hit 40-something status. :-) I missed last night, though--the DVR ate it.
ReplyDeleteForty something? Try Fifty something! Love American Idol and my fav is Adam. He is just such a great performer and I look forward to seeing what he will do each week. I pretty much agree with the rest of your commentary, though I fell asleep before Lil's performance, (being woke at 5 am by the dog barking after going to bed after midnight will do that) but I just never understood how she made it so far. Her voice always sounds off to me.
ReplyDeleteI'm (cough, cough) almost 50 and I have Adam's performance from last week bookmarked!! Love him!
ReplyDelete41 and lovin it too and agreeing with all your comments!!
ReplyDeleteI'm watching too! I am with you almost 100%, but I beg to differ regarding Matt. I think he's really talented and musical...for which I give high marks to any contestant. Alot of people can sing, but the boy has music in his soul.
ReplyDeleteI love watching American Idol--and I am close to the 40 marker, so fear not. My darling daughter who is 4 loves it too!!--usually she doens see it real time (love TiVo) but since it is spring break--a little later bed time. I so agree with all of your comments. By the way--I totally love your blog! Your girls are adorable!!
ReplyDeleteyou have excellent taste! adam is so amazing. i sit with my chin on the floor every single week. it just comes so naturally for him. i'd love to be able to hit his high notes. and tell me this: couldn't you see him just totally KILLING a guns n roses song? he'd do better than axl, me thinks. :)
ReplyDeleteand btw, i'm 37....so that's close enough to 40 and YES, i am watching this season religiously.
I will admit...I have not watched one episode of American Idol this year. I know, you can't believe it. But I have watched Dancing with the stars. I really think at over 40 (which I am too), you need a vice, so why not reality TV.
ReplyDeleteA few more years to 40 ...
ReplyDeletebut LOVE this show! I agree with just about all of your review. I still adore Danny. Just love his voice. I enjoy Matt and Kris. I think they're very talented. I think the other contestants are probably just overshadowed by Adam's showmanship. How could anybody compete with that? But yes.. Adam is now my fave.
PS. I couldn't stop staring at QT's shoes! I was like WTH?!
ReplyDeleteYes, I admit it,I'm 42 & it is the highlight of my week :) My dh,5 yr old China girl watch it faithfully..well she falls asleep on the couch about 8:15 but we adults watch. My fav is Danny.
ReplyDeleteYou are so funny! Love your comments. I think you are dead on...oh, and your comment on Lil "But the last three or so songs have just been okay for me"...sounded like something Randy would have said.

Hey, the results are starting right now.
ReplyDeleteAdam is UNBELIEVABLE!!!! I love Alison and Danny too but Adam.........blows me away!
Gonna watch now!
QT may have a bad back. A lot of people swear by MBTs for helping to alleviate back pain. Some say they can tell the difference as soon as they put them on. I haven't ever tried them on so I couldn't tell you.
ReplyDeleteKeri
OK GUYS Move over. I'm getting close to 70 and I think ADAM is HOT.
ReplyDeleteScarlet
Totally agree with everything you said!!
ReplyDeleteYou're not alone. And I turn 40 this year. Martina has been hooked on AI since she was 2, two years ago. When she first started watching it, she would ask on random days of the week if AI was on, and if we'd say "not until Tuesday" she'd just start bawling.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I voted for Danny. You're right--what he sang wasn't my favorite, but I would buy his records. (No, I probably wouldn't pay to see him in concert, because I wouldn't pay that much to see ANYONE in concert!) I do think Adam is awesome, but I doubt I'd buy anything by him because I don't think he'll be singing my kind of music. I do buy Carrie Underwood. :)
Anyway, Martina insisted on voting for Kris and Allison. So we voted for them too.
Her other favorites, are gone, unfortunately. Jasmine, Alexis, and Megan. She's partial to girls, especially girls who have preschool-aged children.
No, you are definitely NOT the only forty-something watching American Idol!! And I couldn't agree with your comments more. I LOVED Adam's performance last week, and I really liked Chris' rendition this week from the awesome little movie, Once. Adam and Allison HAVE to be the top two, though!
ReplyDeleteI'm in Canada and cannot vote despite watching religiously every week. So a big shout out to ya'll to vote a few extra times for me!!!
Heather (about two adopt two little girls from Taiwan in less than 2 weeks!!!)
Ooooooh someone else addicted to reality tv!! I watch waaaaaay too much, but it's not my fault! I watch one show and I get hooked!! I like, Hells kitchen, deadliest catch, idol, and I am really ashamed to admit I watch the Real Housewives of NY. There I said it!
ReplyDeleteStace
Checking in as yet another 40-something gal watching A.I.! Hubby likes Adam a lot, he's a little too-something for me. I like Danny :)
