The girls just HAD to make snack bentos today

And who am I to deny them a little creative endeavor in the kitchen? Hey maybe some day soon I can just sit in the recliner, watch tv, and they'll make ME lunch! (A girl can dream, right?)

They picked out their own bento boxes, colorful inner containers, and snacks, which consisted of grape poppasicles (frozen grapes), smashed bread cutouts, peanut butter and jelly (for Ro) or just jelly (for Ree), some Kashi cereal (for Ro), and string cheese. All I had to do was open the tough jelly jar and take a few pictures. They did a pretty good job, in my opinion, and had a lot of fun. And (more importantly) it took them about 20 minutes to put the bentos together. Which meant 20 minutes of peace and quiet. Yeah! Ro left, Ree right, deliberating over their choices:

We had to stop for a brief time-out after Ro disfigured one of the little cups:

They thought that rolling out the bread was sorta like rolling PlayDoh:

It required extra-serious concentration to get that jelly just right:

Ree's bento on the left, and Ro's on the right. And I clearly have no earthly idea how to correctly photograph sequins. I swear they were all facing the same way and looked perfectly normal to the naked eye. Oh well, I guess I have no future as a disco photographer.

Ree said "Ooooooooooo, dis grape is so cold... yook mama, I make dee cold face!"

  2. Awesome! I'm always interested in toddler food. They did good! How about that rolling the bread before you cut it? I really learned something there.

  4. So fun! I also love the idea of rolling out the bread. You're so smart.

And so loving the bentos! I bought a bunch online and dipped my toe into the bento waters this weekend. Pi came up and exclaimed, "fun lunch!" before devouring it all!

I'm wondering if the sequins are all lined up and flat, but that might be your reflection showing in them...? Just a thought. I so want you to have that disco photog career.

  8. Cute! What a great idea! I would have never thought of rolling the bread before the cut-outs. I'm having a picnic with a fellow blogger tomorrow ... perhaps Bento will be the repas du jour!!

I wonder if rolling the bread out and then placing a filling (i.e.--pb, pb&j, just j, cream cheese & j) and THEN using cutouts would work. I love that you got them both involved with preparing their own lunches. My daughter tells me that Sarah got a WATERMELON out of the fridge and brought to her to cut--well, if we foster independence--we have to be prepared for the consequences--LOL

  13. So you got 20 minutes of peace and quiet but how many minutes of extra clean-up did it add at the end?? My lazy ways always take that into consideration. Very fun having the girls make their bentos and best of all, since they picked everything out you know they'll eat it all.

  14. Love the pictures! But this "bentos" thing... I don't get it! lol I love what I am seeing but I am not sure I understand the concept... reading way too deep in to this aren't I? Maybe it's a FL thing and we just don't know about them down here? I have never heard of this before you guys and haven't seen them in the stores.... :)

Thanks for the smiles! We appreciate Bento lunches here too. My DD,6, was making faces on banana slices. Her brother asked her what she was doing, and she said, "I'm making 'healthy-freshes'. I'm gonna have a store of them, don't 'cha know?" Not sure if there's a big demand for bananas with 'interesting' toppings or not, but if so, we're on it! Have fun on vacation. Can't wait to see your pics!
