10 things in 10 minutes

The girls and I were killing some time before dinner yesterday, so I proposed this fun challenge: we grabbed our cameras, set the timer for 10 minutes, then walked around and took pictures of the first 10 things we saw that we liked. It was just a quick little exercise, not the end-all-be-all list of our 10 favorite things in the world, rather the first 10 things that caught our eyes and made us smile. The results were kind of fun. Here's what I captured in my walk, which was pretty much just around my kitchen/family room: 10ThingsM3 1 Love my Old Navy pajama bottoms, seriously, love... 2 The Nordstrom Anniversary sale (wanna guess whether this bag is full of clothes for me or the girls?). 3 My laptop desk—a bean-bag bottom so I can readjust every few seconds (yeah I'm fidgety like that). 4 Lipton family-size teabags for brewing a big 'ole pitcher of ice tea, mmmm. 5 Mac Viva Glam VI lipstick, oh man, this stuff is just the best. 6 Our Ontel Swivel Sweeper (how unsexy is it that I love a swivel sweeper? They're sold at Target if you need one. I'm just sayin'...) DSC_12047 Crazy Eights—the girls are mad for this game. (We had a surprise visitor last night and made him play. Here I am winning one game, and Ro won the next one—can you believe we didn't let the rookie visitor win?!). 8 Come on, how cute are these fun little sandwich holders from the dollar bin at Target? 9 Neat mosaic prints from BigHugeLabs.com. This company has great programs that work with Flickr. 10 Archer Farms generic cereal from Target. Wowee. The Blueberry Granola has whole freeze-dried blueberries and the Multigrain Cereal is a dead ringer for Kashi cereal but a little better. Here's what Ro came up with and what she said about it: 10ThingsRo 1 My lieberry books, I yuv da lieberry, 2 Our bootiful chalk painting on the patio, 3 Oooo, my chalk handprints, 4 I took a picture of my grass, 5 Here's da lid of da sand table, 6 I got really close to my water squirter, 7 The door, 8 My PolliWalks, 9 Our baby peeshurs and da Kleenex, 10 My mama. (Ro also ran upstairs and took a picture of the pink piano in her room, but that picture didn't come out) And here's what Ree shot and what she said: 10ThingsRee 1 Da tv looks pretty, 2 My seester taking a peeshur of me (giggle giggle), 3 Xena (heehee), 4 My lieberry book bag, 5 Da outside, 6 My dolls and da mirror, 7 Our playhouse, I yike our playhouse, 8 Da yight (light), 9 Our flamly peeshurs on the wall, 10 Mama's feet (giggle giggle) Fun stuff! It ended up being a neat challenge to do, especially with the kiddos, it was just so interesting to see what everyone picked. If anyone else wants to do the 10 Things in 10 Minutes challenge, I'd love to see what you come up with!

Great idea--I'll steal that activity! Also, does the swivel sweeper work on tile (and grout)?

  2. That was a really cute idea and what really made it work was writing what the girls said...in their language. Love it!

  4. What a great idea! I'm going to have to try that sometime with my 3 1/2 year girl - perhaps when she's under my feet waiting for dinner...

  5. That's really fun! Great exercise. How did you make the mosaic of all the pictures? I'd take a picture of that!

  7. Hi, yes, the swivel sweeper works on tile, at least our tile, which is about 6" tile (we use it in the bathrooms and the laundry room). It gets up all those stray hairs and pieces of dirt that come from who knows where.

The little mosaics in this post I made with bighugelabs.com. You just load your pics into a Flickr set, then tell bighugelabs how many rows and columns you want and point them at your Flickr set and whizbang they make it for you. (You can also upload the indiv pics straight from your computer, it just takes longer for me).

  9. What an awesome idea! What cameras are the girls using? I'd love a camera for my little guy.

  10. Didn't get to win but had TONS of fun. Thanks for having me.

Need to do the "10 things in 10 minutes" challenge when I'm back home...

  11. What a fun idea! Gracie loves taking pix with her camera and it looks like the same one your girls have. So, I have to ask, how the heck do you get the pictures from the camera to the pc? I didn't buy a card, the nice Radio Shack man told me the internal memory was quite large so I didn't... the only cord I have is phono style... doesn't go to a pc. Anywho.... love the girl's pics... thanks for the fun idea!

  12. Kristie: Yes! Definitely do it! I'd love to see what everyone else comes up with in the challenge. I just added that to the bottom of the post, so whip out those cameras!

Kristin: The girls have the little orange VTech kid cameras, and they're ok, but not great. One of them has a messed up viewfinder already (admittedly they do get a lot of abuse) and the dials that add in cartoon elements to your photos or disable the flash are a little too easy for the kids to accidentally activate. I know that Fisher Price makes a competitor camera to the VTech, and have heard good things about that one. If I had it to do over again, I might just get the girls cheapo "real" point-and-shoot cameras, maybe some refurbished units. The VTechs were something like $60 or $65, so they weren't inexpensive.

Lisa: Any standard USB cord will do. The small plug goes into an almost-hidden port on the front of the camera, you kind of have to use the plug to force the port door open.

  13. What a fun thing to do. When we have off in a couple of weeks I'll have to put some new batteries in Maisie's camera and follow your lead.

Very clever! Ro has quite the artistic eye.

  15. Yes. I too was very impressed with Ro's pics and comments......even better than your selections!

  16. I love this idea! How fun.

  17. We'll be stealing this idea, too. At some point. But probably not tomorrow. Because that would require planning.

  18. OK... so I've been a terrible friend... you've posted 25 times, since my last visit!!! *gasp*!!

What a gorgeous post to come home to?!! I love that the girls took pics of you (and your feet!) awww...

  19. You are so awesome! I love seeing all of the things you come up with! Terrific!

We're going to need to get Little Bit a camera...

I've been meaning to try those Target cereals - I am strangely intrigued by the box shape!

  22. Very cute idea. Mia takes random pictures with her V-tech and it is funny to see them later. Although her camera doesn't take as nice pictures as those. They seem to be dark and blurry.

I also love the Swivel Sweeper, but my battery never lasts. I charge it and it only runs for a couple of minutes. I even bought another battery and the same thing.

  23. Hi Susan, for the VTech, is the flash set on Auto? Check the manual to reset it, it's one of the buttons that gets hit easily, and if it's set to off then the pics are usually too dark and just don't work. Also, on your swivel sweeper, is it an Ontel? We had another brand once, and it was a total dud. I've had four Ontel sweepers now, and they rock (the girls like to use them, so they generally get horrendously abused and crashed against walls until they literally fall to pieces and have to be replaced).

  24. How fun and what a great idea : ) You are so creative!!!

  25. What a great idea! How neat to see what each ofyour chose and how different all of your pictures are.

I would have bet money that your pictures would have one of chocolate...until I realized that to take a picture of it it would have had to been in the house, uneaten. Yup....that's not happening!

    Fun game!

  26. You are one creative woman. I love how both girls took a picture of you, they are so sweet. BTW, we are about to use the CARES with our daughter in a few days (28 mos. old), and I think I saw pictures of the girls using them. Is it easy to install and were you satisfied? We tried it out in the car (in the driveway, before anons get all upset) and it did not seem too bad.

  27. Are the girls pictures cropped? I love them all, Ro's are especially creative.

  28. Very cute. I'd love to try this with Jammer but he is just too young still. His picture taking is mostly of the floor.

  31. Great idea M3! I'm writing that one down for the future.

  32. First of all, love this post. Isn't it great to see how kids see the world.
Secondly and mainly the reason I am posting. I see that the girls have an outdoor playhouse and they seem to love it. I just bought and had my poor old husband construct one in our backyard and my daughter will NOT go anywhere near it. I have tried everythign that I can think of to entice her in, but no go. We do have some Daddy Long Leg spiders that get in there, but we sprayed for them- still no playing in the house. Dod your girls ever go through that with their house? I don't remember you posting anything like that I can remember the posts of Bob Bob building it so...... any suggestions for me?

  33. This is an awesome idea! I love the photos and seeing it through their eyes!

( I love those sandwhich things. They are awesome!)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hey Michal, on the playhouse, don't despair. Our girls will play in it every day for a week, and then they'll go three weeks without even looking at it. They're fickle. They're always up for a tea party in it though -- so maybe try that. Stuff the adults and kids inside and have "real" tea (we use peppermint herbal tea), some fancy crackers, and whatever other tea food your daughter wants to prepare.
