Well now we know why the damn cat was going through so much cat food

DSC_0497LR Zena, I'm sorry that we maligned your character and called you Heavy Z. And I'm also sorry that my clever duct-taping job (which really was a thing of beauty and was supposed to keep animals out of the garage) wasn't quite up to snuff. Who knew we were dealing with an animal who would simply grab the door from the outside and lift it open?

OMG - we are having the same problem! I have placed a concrete block on top of our garbage can & those suckers are smart enough to move it over & lift the lid. I watched out the window one night - I've never seen anything like it. They are very, very smart!!!

  4. Oh, man... we have a raccoon problem here, too, although he doesn't actually come in the house. Same thing with the local possum. Don't get me started...

OMG!! I can't believe it would come into your house! I don't know what's going on with the raccoons around here, I see them walking around during the day all the time - aren't they supposed to be nocturnal! Our city is having a garbage pickup strike right now - the raccoons must think they're at an all you can eat buffet!!lol

  7. Gracencameronsmomy: Funny story... I went up to bed last night and TubaDad was going to watch a little tv and then set up my lighting, backgrounds, etc, in the garage so I could take 4th of July pics of the girls today. Well instead he fell asleep on the couch and woke to hear a loud banging noise in the garage. He grabbed the camera (that's my boy!) and went out there and caught our little intruder in the act.

Our opossum guests are just not as photogenic...

  12. Oh my - she's cute though isn't she? I used to live in a pretty wooded area and had 'coons bigger than my Yorkie looking for food all the time.

  13. That's funny! What's the purpose of the hanger taped up?

  14. We just caught a raccoon in a trap two weeks ago.

We found out we had a problem when it was emptying our hummingbird feeder every night.

    I recommend Havahart traps.

  15. G SO FUNNY (but so not)

my gf had a raccoon in her house while her husband was away and she called the police bc there was an intruder.

  16. Melissa, the kitty-door lock got broken while TubaDad was away on a business trip, so I put the hangar up there to keep stray cats from coming in our garage. Purdy, huh? It was supposed to make the kitty-door an "out only" door, but it clearly didn't deter the raccoon at all.

  18. I don't know what's funnier, the raccoon's face or your lovely duct tape contraption! Thanks for the laugh!

Omg! I can't believe he actually got this shot, how funny! Also also, your door contraption looks a lot like the "child proofing" contraption I have on a "trap door" that's in my sons room!

We had a similar thing happen a couple years ago except with a groundhog instead of a raccoon. It actually got in my green beans, laid on its back, and plucked the green beans off the vine and ate them. Thankfully my husband got his rifle out and killed the little sucker--wasn't supposed to but after undermining the garage and leaving a foot high pile of sand in its wake we had had enough!

  24. OMGosh, that is funny, last week I got pictures of the coons eating Shadows food (our cat), aren't we nice to feed the wild life, what next?

  25. Whoa!!! Now that's one clever 'cat!' Phew....sure am glad we didn't cross paths with this little one when venturing into the garage!! Also very, VERY glad you have the night lock on the door into the house!! Coons, S's....what next? Hopefully this is the end of your 'wild kingdom!'

  26. PS - GREAT pic!!! Who was in the right place at the right time to capture that one??

  27. OMG. This is like my new nightmare. I HATE racoons! HATE them. I used to work at a campround in college and those beasts would growl and scratch at the door to the booth I worked and would freak me out. We have a dog door... and I've always wondered if an animal would never think about getting into our house. EEEEEE!!!

  28. Ain't wildlife grand?? Sheesh!

Maybe if you added a big dog to your family to scare away the raccoon...then you can buy dog food...then you can get an expensive gardener to clean up the poop...then you can spend more money having him spruce up the landscaping... so you can take more picture for us! Yay!

What?? You don't like my idea?? Oh well, I tried. ;)

  29. Oh no! They're sneaky, aren't they? Cute. But sneaky.

  30. Slightly off the subject but I have been thinking about this for days and just needed to post a reminder to you and your adoring subjects in blogland ... Do you remember while waiting for your referral that you tried to do the Mento's trick? Then you had to call in the troops with TubaDad and BobBob? I still laugh at that escapade!!!! Thanks for keeping the laughs coming!!!

  31. I am so IMPRESSED with your husband:)
    That is just to funny!!!

  32. I love him! Look at that little face! Of course, I must remember he'd just as soon eat my hand as cuddle with me. I shall call him Raisin and he shall be mine.

Poor hungry Z. Our two kitties could stand to share their food with some rascals. Kitty diets aren't our thing.

    Best,

    Indiana Lori

  36. HYSTERICAL! Except your raccoon is MUCH cuter than the ones we have here. The ones we have here are murderers! They stole our turtles and returned the empty shells! UUGH!

That is the funniest thing I have ever seen!! No doubt, I'm still laughing. You and that camera! Girl, you are something!
Thanks for the belly laugh. Life needs those periodically to keep things in balance.
    Joy to you,

  38. We have two raccoon stories. When we had lived here (Pgh, PA) barely a few weeks.. (newly transplanted from Southern California!) I THOUGHT I was feeding a skinny barn cat, leaving dry food in a bowl on our porch each day. (Hubby thought it would be fun for us cityfolk to live on a farm!) One night I peaked out to see the cat and saw a mama raccoon and 2 babies. I quit feeding the cat, needless to say! Then, when we moved more into the "city", we had something living in our house. I heard it creeping and running between the downstairs and upstairs floors. Plus, when I rocked my baby son, the smell coming from his vent was similar to a zoo and I heard purring. Yeah...it was a raccoon and 3 babies. After we tore a huge hole in our dining room to get at them, the mama took off with a baby in her mouth, dropped it and it fell down the wall between the dining room and the outside wall. We got the two babies out of the nest and had to continuing tearing down the wall until we got to the dropped baby. The mama was close by and hissing for a while but then took off. I took the babies to a local place that takes wild animals, raises, and releases. Raccoons are the DEVIL...(imagine the cajun mama from Water Boy!..Kathy Bates!) Haha! Love your picture of the devil caught in the act! And the girls are just fun to watch in all their activities and fun! Thanks for sharing!

  39. How in the world did you catch him in the act? I must say, though...I have a soft spot for raccoons. Not that I'd ever go near one, but I do think that they're cute.
