Happy birthday Candy Land!

You've played the sweet board game Candy Land, right? I know, I know, probably everyone has. Ro and Ree are no exception. I think it was the first game they ever got, and they're just nuts for it. Well you can imagine the excitement when the girls got invited to Candy Land's 60th birthday party in San Francisco. It was crazy—event organizers transformed Lombard Street (the world's most crooked street) into the world's largest game of Candy Land. Ro and Ree couldn't believe their eyes. They ogled the larger-than-life gameboard; chatted up King Kandy, Princess Lolly, and Princess Frostine; ate more candy than I'll ever admit; stood in line for a piece of the wild birthday cake (which they promptly gave to BobBob); and even got their very own preview copy of the new Candy Land Sweet Celebration Game. Neat, neat day. IMG_3009 IMG_3030m "Um, Princess Frostine, can we touch your pretty pink dress?": IMG_3049m_2s I asked them to stand near the games so I could get a pic, and they plopped right down on them. Eeps. IMG_3057 Ro snuck a feel of Princess Lolly's lollipop: IMG_3063m_3s Ree asked King Kandy why he had such big feet: IMG_3066_4s "Cake? Did someone say cake?": IMG_3071_6s "Wow, this is a really big game": IMG_3077m_7s IMG_3081_9s Thanks, Candy Land, we had fun celebrating your birthday! IMG_3088m_12s

  7. Um...what about Candy Land for their birthday shoot? YOu could make big pieces of candy out of styrofoam covered in colored cellophane. I've seen them several different shaped styrofoam "to go" boxes wrapped in cellophane and strung together in a garland. Or give them huge lollipops...

It would be precious on the white background thing you've got going.

Been down Lombard a bazillion times. Such fun to see this! My senior sneak day we went to the Pulgas Temple - know where that is? Right off I-280. Great photos for sure. Ree and Ro are just the cutest ever. Period.

  21. We never get cool stuff like this in the Midwest! Candy Land is so big around this house that it was the theme of Kelly's birthday party last year. Who knew the Gumdrop Mountains were actually made of styrofoam and rainbow tissue paper? I went NUTS making decorations. SO much fun.

    Good times Twinadoes!

  22. How fantastic! My girls would have loved it! But I have to confess -- I HATE Candyland!!!! I've always considered playing Candyland with a 3-year-old one of Dante's 7 circles of h^ll! All that going back practically to the beginning just when you think the game is almost over . . . (I don't think my girls ever figured out how much I detested playing that game!)

  25. Lombard Street is cool just as it is. I imagine being transformed into a life-size Candyland made it just about the coolest place in the U.S.! Thanks for sharing with us.

  31. My mom, sister and I follow your most wonderful blog.
My sister sent me this link to a YouTube video of an AP story about Candyland.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25sO_XFu6Q0

(not sure if this link will work, but the name of the video is "Calif. Street Turned Into Life-Size 'Candy Land'")

We are pretty sure your girls make an appearence at the 1 min 3 sec. mark.
Anyway, if you haven't seen it already, we thought you may be interested.

Your girls are cute as can be! My daughter is the same age as your beauties and also from China. She calls Ro and Ree her friends from China. :)

  32. Hey Janet, it is them! They were standing on the side of Lombard Street at the time licking lollipops that we had secretly put on the ground near their feet (it was kinda funny, we said "Oh look, Princess Lolly must have left these for you!"). AP took that video, and then a whole bunch of stations aired it, which was fun.

Very cool! We were at the beach this week and my mom told me about this being in the paper. Candyland was our theme for Savannah's first birthday party! I painted a painter's canvas of the gameboard so the kids could play during the party.....it was a TON of work but came out very cool and everyone still talks about our pink chocolate fountain and ultimate candy favor bar!
