Online workshop: Talking to children about adoption

Remember a while back when I posted that Talking About Adoption is Hard? Well I still think it's hard, and I'm still trying to learn as much as possible. I'm reading blogs from folks who seem to have a better handle on it than I do, devouring as many books as I can get my hands on, and just signed up for an online workshop called "Talking to Children about Adoption," which is being held by the well-respected folks at the Center for Adoption Support and Education (C.A.S.E.). C.A.S.E. is a non-profit adoptive family support center, and their description says that "since 1998, adoption-competent experts at C.A.S.E. have dedicated their work to ensuring the well-being of foster and adoptive children of all backgrounds." These guys have offered tons of classes and training in the past, but this is their foray into the online arena, and I was really excited to sign up. If you want to sign up too, here's the info: When: Thursday, September 24, 2009, from 6-7pm Pacific time (9-1opm Eastern time) Instructor: Ellen Singer, LCSW-C Details: Finally our most-requested workshop is available online. Discover what children understand and think about adoption. Find out how and when to share your child's adoption story and how to encourage them to feel safe to ask questions and share their thoughts and feelings. (toll-free dial-in/log on instructions and passcode will be emailed upon payment confirmation.) Fee: $20 Registration: Click here to sign up for the workshop. By the way, when I talked to a director at C.A.S.E. (to get permission to post this), she said to be sure and mention that this is their first online class, and they are a tiny non-profit staff, so please have patience with them as they explore this new territory and work out all the kinks. If you do sign up, please allow at least a week to receive follow-up materials.

  2. Thank you! I just signed up - long time lurker. My two year old daughter is adopted and I have biological identical twins who are ten months old. Time to start thinking about this stuff!

As the Mom of 2 China gals, 8 and 10, I know it can be scary starting to talk about adoption.... I found that once I got started, around age 2, I just kept it going and it has gotten easier and easier. Doesn't make the emotion any less, but the more you talk and ask the kids questions, the more you discover directions to take with your questions, books to read together, etc. Really, the adoption talk is easy, 'cause the sex talk comes up sooner than you think. :)

  6. I cannot rave enough about C.A.S.E.! We live about thirty minutes from their tiny offices. The staff is huge in heart and experience, albeit small in numbers.

  7. Great info, thanks! My best friend adopted her second child just last week. My husband and I have written referral letters for 4 other friends adopting. I'm happy to have this information to pass forward, as this seems to be a common topic in our group of friends.

    Best,

    Indiana Lori

Do you mind sharing some of the blogs that you find helpful in reading about this topic? Always trying to stay educated on the subject and not finding it goes as smoothly as some do either.
    Thank you!
