How much is medical school anyways?

Have I mentioned that our girls are scared of most movies and are frightened by any rides at Disneyland where it's dark or they play loud music? Yep, it's true. But there is one scary thing that Ro and Ree love. Seriously LOVE. It's blood. They're just obsessed with it. They like to talk about it, see it, act out elaborate surgeries involving it, ask countless questions about it, and watch medical shows and videos about it. Forget Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Little Bear, now tv-time is all about Grey's Anatomy.

If we try to sneak in an episode without telling them, they hear the music and come tearing into the room complaining up a storm and interrogating us about whether there was any blood that they missed. They want us to pause the show on any particularly gory scenes, and beg to replay them over and over again. When TubaDad had to get some blood drawn for a followup to the accident, we asked if Ro and Ree wanted to meet him at the doctor's office to witness it. They nearly knocked me over in their excitement to get to the car. Once there, Ree said she wanted to videotape it and dug my little Flip video camera out of the console and carried it in. And then, the little stinker actually did video the whole procedure. I'm guessing that lab technician hasn't ever had his every move scrutinized by four-year-olds wielding video cameras before. The video turned out pretty funny, by the way, particularly the part where she was watching the needle so intently that the camera slowly dipped down to floor without her noticing. It would probably be in poor taste to post it, right? (I'm such a terrible judge of those kinds of things. I'll just err on the side of caution here, unless someone's dying to see it.)

Then yesterday, I stopped by the drugstore to get an H1N1 shot and the technician tried to get the girls to stay on the other side of the table while she administered it. Nice try. They ducked down and wedged past her so they could hold my hand and get a good view. They know how I am about needles, so Ro squeezed my hand as hard as she could and Ree threw her arms around me and said "Be brave mama!" Then they stared intently at the needle, gleefully exclaimed that there was one drop of blood, and informed me when it was over. The lady was kind of unnerved by them, I think, but they thought it was great fun.

Tonight they played Grey's Anatomy until it was time to go to bed. They donned gloves, broke out the doctor's kits, stuffed babydolls in their pajamas, and gave each other emergency C-sections about 30 or 40 times. I think Ro was Izzie and Ree was Alex, if you watch the show. This picture cracks me up because you can see the baby poking out of Ree's pajamas as well as the fancy Easter gloves that Ro is wearing for her surgeon's gloves:

The babies were just flying all over the place. That OR room was a mess:

TubaDad and I were joking back and forth about their doctor/blood obsession the other day when he said "Yeah it's not going to be so funny when we have to pay to put two of them through medical school at the same time." And we both abruptly stopped laughing. ;-)

What you are seeing is very characteristic of four year olds. If you walk into any Head start class of this age group you will see kids playing doctor and nurse and "fighting" over syringes, gloves, etc.. They love it.

  2. Hey M3,
Followed your blog for quite a long time now..I've commented a few times, but this post cracked me up, particularly the photo of the baby sticking out under the jammies. I used to draw blood and never had kiddos so interested (usually the opposite!) I'm now a pediatric RN, so this post just cracked me up! I also got a kick out of the post of them climbing. I about had a heart attack when I saw them "climbing" on the staircase at your cabin a few posts ago, you've got some total daredevils on your hands :) ...Thanks for your blog! Love it! Makes me laugh and we all need a good chuckle sometimes!
    Blessings,
    Stacy

  5. I think if you post the video, it's a violation of the unbreakable principle of patient-phlebotomist confidentiality. Your kids crack me up. Cheer up. Maybe they don't really want to doctors. Maybe they just want to be vampires.

    XOXO

  7. That is so funny because Emma has no problem with blood either. The only thing is that she HATES to see someone get hurt but seeing her own blood (which pretty much never happens) is no problem. She has no problem with needles/shots and like the girls, Emma loves to be the doctor.
Oh and she doesn't like any of the Disney rides (for the same reason as your girls) that is why we don't plan to take her anymore until she is 15, haha!

  8. I've lurked on your blog for awhile now, your girls are ADORABLE ... I decided to leave a comment today because I am a writer on Grey's and want to thank you for adding new viewers! My daughter is 6 and is still trying to figure out what 'Robert' (Patrick Dempsey's character in Enchanted) is doing at Seattle Grace! I can't wait to go into the writer's room tomorrow and say that I've heard from some fans and they like it when it's really bloody ....

  10. Hate to break it to you, but my niece was always obsessed with that sort of thing, too. Nowadays, people address my highly educated niece as "doctor."

And thank you, thank you, thank you for not posting that video.

  11. My Pipsqueak used to (and sometimes still does this) about TV shows with surgery. Her favorite had to be the surgeries on Emergency Vet.

Keep enjoying them they grow up way too fast!

  15. Love it! And at least they are playing Grey's. My sister, at this age, was playing Quincy. You know, the coroner? Who worked on DEAD PEOPLE? (I just adore your girls.)

  16. Look at it this way, if they go to medical school, at least you will always have some fantastic doctors to take care of you in your senior years! :) (Well, unless they decide to become ob/gyn's.)

And--it is WAY too cool that an actual writer of Grey's posted on your blog! I'm so envious of you M3!

  17. Very funny indeed. And I hope for your sakes that they get scholorships to that medical school!

  19. It reminds me of the time Sara and I were playing doctor and she told me Pooh overdosed on milk and honey. She attempted to pump his stomach and then announced it was of no use. Pooh was dead. She buried him in a shoebox. I thought maybe I should censor her TV watching, but nah...getting a head start on med school might increase her shot at a scholarship!!!

  20. Wow a writer on Grey's reads your blog!!! Maybe you should get them to take you and the girls to visit the set!!!

Better start saving now for those uni's!!!

  21. MJ is also fascinated with all things doctor. She got a doctor's kit for Christmas, and it is probably her favorite gift. We haven't let her watch any surgery scenes on TV yet, though. I'm sure she would be obsessed, too. :-)

My sister's [now ex] boyfriend was obsessed [!!!!] with all things "heart" when he was a kid. His mother has countless photos of his dressed as a doctor, playing doctor, etc. For his birthday one year, they bought him a REAL stethescope and he used to listen to his own heart beat and drift off to sleep. i kid you not.

Well, today he's a successful Cardiologist at the hospital associated with Marshall in West Virginia [can't remember the name) and at his Med.school grad party, the whole room was decorated with photos of him throughout his childhood dressed as a Dr. or listening to his heartbeat, etc. SO cute.

I'm a long time follower of your blog (think I've commented a couple of times). Love this post! Your girls are so adorable. BTW - My husband is a DR. and he says it's probably bad news for you guys on the med school front B/C he was just like your girls as a kid - constantly fascinated by all things bloody, and medical and he knew by age 10 that he simply had to be a DR. Good luck!!

Ha! My little sister has always been the same way. When she had surgery a few years ago, she requested that the doctor VIDEO TAPE IT FOR HER TO WATCH LATER.

Yes, she's applying to medical school now...

  25. Love it! Start saving for med school now. It's seems like it could be a strong possibility. :)

  29. There was a show on TLC years ago, that my girls would never miss, called "The Operation". The program brought you through a full hip replacement, or a gall badder surgery, anything! It was great, and it was very educational (for me) and there was lots of bones and blood! (but no drama from McDreamy etc.. lol) My girls LOVED it and played "operation" every day, they were about the same age as our girls.
I wonder if you could find any of the episodes on You Tube? I bet they'd love it!

  30. Gave each other emergency C sections? HA HA HA HA HA... I'm laughing out loud like a goon in my office reading that. It's hysterical. I don't know how you haven't broken a rib from laughing at your girls yet. They are just TOO DARN MUCH!!

I'm a new MD and can attest to the cost and time. So with twins, I'd say start saving now! And encourage them to go to state schools.

  35. I have a blood-obsessed kiddo too, but I thought hers was stemmed from her bleeding disorder (vWD)... the teacher affectionately refers to her as the "class nurse" and she loves real surgical shows (they come on our local channels from time to time as advertisements for orthopaedic and plastic surgery centers). Glad our medical school bills will only be times 1! LOL! Good luck! Love your blog!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Haha. You weren't kidding. Glad I could help ;)

If they both decide to go to medical school, I guess you have me to thank! Haha.

That doesn't mean you can send me the bill.
