Going to Kindergarten in a cast

Sweet little Ree broke two bones in her left arm yesterday and we spent the afternoon and evening at the hospital.

She jumped for those trapeze-ring monkey bars at Gilroy Gardens, missed, and came down on her arm, completely snapping her radius and ulna bones near the wrist. It was so horrible!!!!! Oh my gosh, I have never seen an arm zigzag-bent like that. Ugh. She was screaming from the pain. I grabbed her and a cousin's stroller, headed directly for the car, and called TubaDad on the way (he was strapped into the rollercoaster with two of the 12 Texas relatives who are visiting this week and told me he would run to meet us the instant the coaster stopped). We drove to the nearest hospital and checked into the ER. (It's Saint Louise, in case anyone is at Gilroy Gardens and needs medical attention, and they were incredibly wonderful with both girls.)

Ree had xrays, got two hideously painful shots of morphine in her thighs, and then they called in an orthopedic surgeon and put her completely out for the resetting and casting (they said it would be excrutiating if she was awake). I was outwardly calm until the moment she went under and they wisked me out of the room. I took one step into the hallway and started sobbing. They must see that all the time, because the nurse gave me a massive hug, took me immediately to a chair, and brought me a cold washcloth, a box of kleenex, a diet coke, and a handful of chocolates. Then she said to take as long as I needed to pull it together to be strong for Ro who was waiting outside with TubaDad and sat and talked to me until I pulled my crap together.

Ree now has a neon pink cast from her fingers to her upper arm and last night was still in so much pain that she woke up every hour-and-a-half to two hours crying. It was a rough, rough night.

PS: Ro is being so sweet and helpful to her sister. She was really hungry in the ER waiting room that night so I tried to give her some food and she said "No, if Ree can't eat then I'm not eating -- I'll wait for her." My heart!

PSPS: TubaDad took one pic with his iPhone if anyone wants to see Ree’s arm before it was set (I know my family members wanted to see it). Don’t click it if you don’t want to see a horrible break. Seriously.ReesArm

  1. Oh no, not her too. It's so hard to see your little ones in pain, poor Ree. My Trev still has to wear a brace for sports, good thing they are still growing and can heal completely. Did she get a waterproof cast?, it was a lifesaver for us.
So sweet to hear how Ro is caring for her sis!
    Wishing Ree a speedy recovery.

  3. sending more hugs to the whole family ... crying reading this.

Do post cast pictures at some point (as if you wouldn't) as this will be a good reminder to Carmelle about why mommy wants her to be careful.

  4. Massive hugs to all your family, poor little Ree... Wishing her a speedy and pain-free recover. Oh, and Little Ro needs to eat well and get strong to carry things for her sister for a while. :)

  6. We are teary eyed how sweet Ro is. H2 and S2 keep talking and worrying about Ree.
I hope she'll be pain free and all better, soon.

  7. Oh, SO sorry to hear about Ree. Sounds like you handled it beautifully.

Just came across your blog this month and LOVE it. Thanks for living life out loud so we other moms can laugh and learn. I have 2 sons: brothers who are 1 & 2 years old, adopted from Taiwan. I show them photos of your girls and they smile. I think they're in love.

Blessings and prayers for a peaceful and pain free recovery for that arm.

Big hugs! When Catherine told me about this yesterday, I cringed. I can't even imagine how you were feeling. It must have been just awful. I know that she will bounce back in no time and the cast will be a BIG hit with her friends in kindergarten.

Hope she feels better soon...She will remember that day for the rest of her life...trust me...I didn't the same thing in Kindergarten (40 years ago!) and broke both arms at the same time riding (trying to ride) my bike with no hands. I tell my girls the story every time I see them try the same thing!

At least now a days the casts are colorful and more importantly water proof! So once the pain is gone she will be back to normal - jumping, climbing and swimming!

Sounds like you held it together for her at the right time...and waited until she was under to brake down - way to go Mom!

The twin bond is amazing..when one is hurt...both their worlds stop..

  15. Oh poor baby! And poor mommy! Hope she is feeling better today and that you are feeling a bit stronger as well.

  16. Oh my, how awful!! My sister broke her arm like that as a child, falling off the monkey bars. My mom rushed her to the hospital, and as soon as my dad arrived, my mom ran to the bathroom to throw up. It was that bad.
So sorry your sweet girlie got hurt! Hope she is feeling better soon... with a mom like you, I bet you've got all sorts of wonderful 'feel better' things up your sleeve :)

Aww, poor sweetie. Hope she feels better soon. My little girl is a real active climber too. The other day she fell from the monkey bars but luckily only hurt her bottom.
I'm sure Ree will find a way to have fun with her cast on!

I broke my left arm the summer before I started Kindergarten too!
I'll never forget it, my Mom drew little bumblebees on my cast in magic marker...they didn't offer different colors back then.

  28. That is so scary and one of my worst fears with my little monkeys.

On a good note - at least their teachers/bus driver will be able to tell them apart for a couple weeks!

  29. I cried as soon as I read your feelings written out. Boy kids pull at my heart strings when they are sick or hurt, and then the comment that Ro made.....WOW...(((hugs)))

  30. Big (((HUGS))) to all of you. Dallas hopes you get to feeling better soon Ree:)))

  31. Aw poor baby! Glad they put her under when they reset her arm. They just gave me huge amounts of pain meds when they reset my leg and I still shutter at the memory of the pain when they pop, pop, popped my leg bones back into place. And that was 10 years ago.

Many hugs to the whole gang! And here's to a quick and speedy recovery!

Oh, my goodness. I had tears reading this! Poor little Ree. What a painful injury. You deserve to have whatever Mommy breakdown/moments you needed b/c your child was in pain and that rips out a Mommy's heart. Keeping Ree in prayers for swift relief from her pain.

  38. Wow! Now I'm crying. It's so hard to see the ones you love in pain. I'm glad it's only a broken bone. She will heal quickly. Seems like every school year at least one kid in my class breaks an arm.

One time when I was teaching first grade, a little boy fell off the monkey bars and all the kids came to get me because he was crying. When I got over to him, he told me he thought he had broken his arm. Kids always say that kind of thing and it's usually not the case. I assured him it wasn't that serious and he would be all right as soon as he saw the nurse and she gave him an ice pack for it. Well, the very next day he came in with a cast on. Broken arm! Good thing I'm a teacher instead of a nurse or a doctor. :P

  41. I did the same thing the week before I started kindergarten -- fell off of a swing and broke my arm. Be reassured -- it healed beautifully (it helped that my aunt visited in the hospital and brought me the Barbie horse I'd been eying). It was even kind of fun to have the cast for the first few weeks of kindergarten -- everyone wanted to sign it and help me tie my shoes, etc. I was the center of attention! Hopefully Ree will get lots of help too.

(I haven't commented FOREVER, but I still read every post!!)

  42. Oh no the poor girl!! My son broke BOTH arms on monkey bars last summer so I know what you're going through! Plus I'm sporting a nice pink cast on my leg right now after a fall and surgery. I hope you have enough chocolate on hand to help you all get through it ;) I'm sure she'll be back to her normal adorable self soon!

My daughter broke hers in 2nd grade by falling off the monkey bars. Love her heart. They don't complain with the pain long but unfortunately, the cast starts to get stinky & itchy. I made them put a brace on hers for a couple extra weeks because I was so paranoid it hadn't healed completely. Best of luck to you guys. Ro's little comment made me cry!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Anonymous8/13/2010

  48. Oh my word, I've got tears running down my face just after reading this. How traumatizing for all of you. So glad Ree is going to be okay, and I hope we get lots of cast pictures... and that Ro doesn't feel the need to do this and have it be a "twin" thing.

And can I just say Tubadad ROCKS for answering his phone from you while ON the roller coaster!

I am so very sorry about the arm! Bless her little heart. I know exactly what you are going through. When Erin was 5 she broke her arm, the exact same way! Everything they did for Ree, they did for Erin. I was exactly like you! The dr. asked the nurses to remove me from the room when they were beginning the resetting of the arm and I broke down. I didnt get all the special treatment you did though! Sounds like you were in a great place.
It's so hard to go through those times when your babies are hurting but it will get better! And she will be really cool at school with that bright pink cast! And Ro is such a great sister.
Hang in there, it gets easier as the time passes!!
    Hugs from more Texas cousins!

  58. I don't know who I feel more sorry for! It's so heartbreaking to see your little one in pain. I know I'd gladly break my own arm if it meant my kid didn't have to go through that. I'm sure that's how you feel, too.
I hope she feels better soon, and what a sweet sister to support her like that!

  59. OMG, I don't even know you and this has me in tears. Your PS about Ro not eating. *sniff* So glad Ree is on the mend though.

  60. My son broke his arm when he was 4 (I didn't really think it was broken and didn't even go to the doctor until the next day!) He had a bright green waterproof cast all summer and he LOVED that thing. I think he felt special with it. He even cried the night before it was taken off because he was going to miss it. I saved the old cast and now I can't believe his arm was ever little enough to fit in there. I hope Ree can embrace her cast once the pain goes away.

    ReplyDelete
  61. oh, poor, poor Ree! I know that had to hurt so bad. I'm glad they took such good care of all of you. And Ro, how sweet is she! Taking care of Ree like that and not eating when she can't. I hope that Ree is feeling much, much better today.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Oh, poor Ree!

And poor Mommy too. It's so hard when it's your baby in pain.

We've been there/done that 3 times with Faith (left arm; right arm; then left leg/right leg/left arm just in February). From experience, the pain will subside in a couple of days and she should adapt pretty well to using the cast as a weapon. ;o)

    ReplyDelete
  63. OMG that poor, poor baby! I hope it heals quickly for her, and the pain subsides fast!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. When my son was 5, he fell 3 feet out of a tree and the exact same thing happened. We live in Pittsburgh and he cried as we drove over every single pothole in the city on our way (it was April...you can imagine). At the ER, I signed him in and wrote "broken arm" for reason to be seen. The nursed asked me if I had films..how did I know it was broken. Under my breath so my son couldn't hear, I said "look at it, it's broken!" They jumped real quick after that. Poor Ree ... but the support of her sister will get her through. And mom, after this you'll hover over her a long time before you very slowly allow her back into the world without full padding, pillows tied to her and bubble wrap on every body part.

    ReplyDelete
  65. OH NO!!!! I am so sorry, Mama! That has got to be terrifying!!! I'm told, as I'm sure you've heard a million times, that a break in a kid arm is really not as bad as it would be in an adult, and I can't tell you the number of kids we see at the park with a cast on playing as if there were nothing at all different about that arm. (hug) you'll all be okay.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Oh, poor kiddo! Best wishes for a fast recovery.

Awww I feel so terrible for you guys! I did the exact same thing, the exact same way (falling off the monkey bars and landing on my arm), and broke it right in the same spot! Still remember it like it was yesterday and it was over 25 years ago! It was maybe the second week of first grade. It will get better really quickly- I remember it really throbbing and hurting for a few days and then it was over. Next thing I remember after that was how fun it was when everyone wanted to sign it! She'll be the hit of her class with that hot pink beauty on her arm before you know it!

  92. I had to go all the way down to JaJa before I saw it. I stopped reading the comments when I got to hers. I needed to know if I were the only one who was curious about the bracelet. Surely they had to remove it to put the cast on. Do they come on/off easily? For some reason it makes me sad to think of her without her bracelet. Silly how we feel connected when we don't even know you.

So sorry to hear of the break and all that you've been through. So pleased to hear the beautiful words of a loving sister.

Praying the pain is better now.

  96. Poor baby! Ugh I couldn't click on the photo. Too many memories. This happened to one of my twins when she was in kindergarten. When we were in the car driving to the hospital she said that her arm looked like Harry Potters arm. I'm sure you can relate if you have seen the first movie. Amazing how funny a kid can be in such pain! She is just fine because of the drugs she was given - doesn't remember much, but I'M NOT. I still feel nauseated when I think about that day (and it's been 8 years!). Hope all goes well. Oh and btw there are great products out there that you can buy to put over the cast so they can go swimming.

  97. Reading Joannah's post reminded me of my sister's son. He was around 6 or so and fell out of the backyard tree and came in complaining that he broke his arm (no crying, just complaining). She said, "You did not break your arm. Let me see." He moved his upper arm and only one half moved. She said, "You did break your arm!" He said, "I know!"
After casting, he and his brother would wrestle and such, but when it came time to clean up their room, he would say, "My arm hurts..." Um, yeah.
Still sending hugs, but thought I'd give you a funny story to help.

  102. I did the same thing when I was a little girl. Broke my arm on the monkey bars. I still remember it vividly. The first couple of days were hard... the shock, the hospital, the pain. But then it became super cool!! I actually have good memories of that time. I got so much attention because of the cast. I got special treats and thought it was so fun when people signed it, decorated it, put stickers on it, etc. I made my mom keep the cast for awhile after it came off. She wasn't happy cuz it did stink a little. LOL!

Wishing Ree a quick recovery. She'll be a super star over this though. Just wait and see. She'll be just fine, momma. :)

  103. I hope Ree is doing better. I am sad it happened and especially this time in her life. Praying all is fine by the time school begins. If not, she will look sweet with her pink cast. I can just see Ro caring for her. Hugs to you Mommy.

  104. oh poor Ree!! I do hope it heals quickly and she is out of pain soon, that must be horrible for her, and for you to see her like this!

Oh !!!! this breaks my heart. M3 i know you were terrified and worried, even though things like this happen to children, it still isn't easy to handle....i been there. Poor little Ro, so sweet and sounds like her little heart was broken too. I pray Ree is feeling better real soon, and the pain is controlled. My little granddaughter ( China doll ) climbs, bounces, jumps, hops all the time, so i might just show her the pic so she might understand a little and maybe she will tone it down some. She is 4 yrs. and turns 100 + cartwheels a day and each one i cringe, but we have to let them do some of this and hold our breath a lot i guess. I really hate that this has happened, sending hugs and kisses to Ree (and Ro).

I looked. I shouldn't have looked, but I looked. I can't believe I looked! I am so squeemish....and I looked. You are my hero M3. I hope the chocolate helped!! I think you deserve some homemade cookies or something. Hope both sweeties are doing better, and that Ree is on the mend. She will be the coolest kid in Kindergarten!

    Hang in there!

Stace (who definately should NOT have looked!) Oh, and I hope the rest of the visit with the relatives went well!

  112. Oh heavens! Bless all of your hearts. Sending big Indiana hugs all the way to the West. I used to be an ER nurse and when Sara dislocated her elbow, I cried holding her in bed all night long. We've earned our tears...and gray hair!

    Hugs,

    Indiana Lori

  114. Poor little Ree! I hope she recovers well, and that the pain isn't as bad tonight. It brought tears to my eyes when you said that Ro wouldn't eat until her sister could. :(

  115. I burst into tears for you! The though of seeing my kiddo break her arm like that is so scary!!! I hope she feels better soon!

  116. How can they be so incredibly adorable even in such a rough time. I will be sending you strong Mama Vibes. And fast recovery vibes to the wee one.

  117. OMG, my son did that when he was 6. He fell down some stairs and the arm looked horrible, like a U right in the middle. Broke straight through the ulna and radius bones, had to have it resest, and then a cast for a while followed by a removable brace for a while. The one problem we had was we went to one hospital and they had us drive him ourselves over to the closest Children's Hospital. It was so sad driving my little boy in pain over to the other hospital. I hope she feels better soon and heals quickly!

  118. I haven't ordered on of those, but at Rady Children's they offer an actual waterproof cast - it's $50 extra, but most of the parents here in this beach/water area consider it a must. (San Diego)

Sorry to hear of her break. I'm a substitute teacher and monkey bars are from what I've seen the number 1 way that kids break their arm at school, #2 seems to be trampolines at home (arm or ankle) or skateboarding.

My son broke his arm a year or two ago and then had the cast off three weeks and broke the other one. We've also had two sports related broken thumbs and a broken big toe.

None of it is fun! Hope the cover works for her so she can enjoy the rest of her summer!

  119. Oh honey! When Lizzie broke her leg in November I wished a thousand times over that it could have been me. I swear it is more painful for the parents to watch. She'll be completely healed and amazing you in no time. Lizzie learned how to steer her wheelchair in about an hour! :) What a little trooper Ree is!s

  120. Oh no! God bless that sweet little Ree. Hope you all get back to normal soon. My baby started kindergartem last week. Love your blog...been reading for years!

  121. So awful, poor, poor baby and poor, poor Mummy. Tears streaming reading this, I thought I had empathy before having children but since becoming a Mum I find it just kills me seeing/reading/hearing about a child being hurt.

You did great by the way! Sending good wishes for a nice strong mend to her poor little arm.

  122. Just now saw this. I am SO sorry! I hope she is feeling a little better now, and not in as much pain. My nephew broke his arm at the beginning of the summer, but his wasn't nearly as bad or painful as Ree's seems to have been. Poor girlie!

Also, so excited for them to start kindergarten! How are you feeling about that? Such a big step for everyone, Mom included! I can't wait to hear all about their first day(s).

    ReplyDelete
  123. Oh, no! I'm glad you had such great care at the hospital (for both of you!)...I can't imagine how hard it would be to see your baby in pain!

    ReplyDelete
  124. OH goodness M3! I'm just catching up!!
That nurse deserves such kudos for taking good care of you...chocolate and all!
Hope recovery is quick and the memory fades just as fast. HUGS to you all! Oh and kindergarten?? Where has the year gone!?

  125. Hi! I lurk but rarely comment - however I HAD to say I remember having the EXACT SAME BREAK on the last day of school when I was in first grade! Your post brought tears to my eyes not just because I feel so bad for your little sweetness but it brought back memories! I spend an entire summer in that cast and I'm pretty old ;) so it was heavy and it itched horribly (be prepared for that fun fact) and sadly they just yanked and set my arm back in the old days - but I did get morphine! I'm so glad she is ok and I can't imagine being in the ER like that with my sweet little Jia! You are such a great mom! Warm wishes to you and the family!

  126. OMG I am so, so sorry that this happened to her.

My son did the same thing 1 week before starting kindergarten. It was the last day of daycare and he jumped from the top of the monkey bars in order to avoid being "it" in a game of tag. He broke his elbow.

I hope she is not feeling any more pain and that she enjoys the extra attention for a little while. Kids heal so fast.

Hugs to you - it hard on the parents!

  127. Ever since I read this I have been thinking about all of you....ALOT. Hope your little sweetie is starting to feel a bit better.
Do they make enough chocolate for times like this?
You really are strong...I think I would still be bawling.

  128. okay. okay. breathe (talking to myself). I couldn't read beyond the snapping and the zigzagging as it freaks.me.out. (having suffered such a severe broken leg in first grade, with a plaster cast on for 4 months- yes FOUR). oh the pain of it. she is SO BRAVE. i see from more recent posts she is sporting that cast nicely though!
