No one is tapping on our glass door today

DSC_8196LRSad day at the Salsa house today. Yesterday afternoon, in broad daylight, a raccoon bent the chicken wire, climbed into the duck pen, and killed Midnight and Golden.

We locked our ducks up tight each night, but never thought we had to worry about raccoons during the day. We are all just stunned and so sad that our sweet, funny little ducklings are gone. Those ducklings sure made us smile with their cute personalities and captured our hearts in such a short time. Midnight and Golden, we’ll miss your funny little peep quacking, the way you liked to follow the girls around whenever they were outside, and how you’d come onto the porch every afternoon and peck the glass when you had decided it was lettuce time.

Rest in peace Midnight and Golden.

That's heartbreaking news. We are so sorry to read about it. We had worried about hawks swooping down, but didn't even think about a raccoon.

I'm sorry. How awful! I remember when my first pet died. It broke my heart. Thoughts to the girls. Those ducks seemed tom have quite a happy life while living with you guys though. Maybe the school will give you 2 more, even though I know it wont be the same to the girls. I hope the girls didn't find the ducks that way.

  12. Oh how awful!!! I'm so sorry that all of you are having to deal with this. Those cute duckies were so sweet and such a joy for all of you to have around. Hugs and prayers for you as I know this will be an adjustment.

  13. The girls must be devastated! I have never heard of raccoons attacking in the daytime. Maybe Animal Control can trap the raccoon. It would be awful if it went after the girls.

I'm so sorry Salsa Family, such sad news so close to the girls' birthday. I'm sure Midnight and Golden loved Ro and Ree as much as the girls loved them.

I am so sad to hear this news. Raccoons have become so domesticated and are no longer nocturnal rodents. We have them walking in the street during the day making it a challenge when walking a dog. I hope the girls did not witness the demise of the sweet ducks.

  19. That is so sad. Raccoons can be so brutal. I'm amazed they came in the daylight, they must have been really hungry. I guess now would be a good opportunity to discuss the food chain.

  35. Hi
My name is Jenna and I came across your site. Your girls are beautiful, cute and adoreble. They have pretty smiles. i love all the videos, especially that animal alphabet. That's awful about your ducks. The girls must be really sad as you all must be. it is hard to lose pets. I was born with a rare life threatening disease, developmental delays. I love it when people sign my guestbook. www.miraclechamp.webs.com

  36. Oh no, M3, so sorry about this! Ro and Ree must have been so upset. What a horrible thing to have to discuss with them. I never knew racoons were such a nuisance! Here in the desert we have an occasional coyote, but I would never think to worry about it during the day.

  37. Oh my gosh. I am so sorry for your loss, it is just heartbreaking. Sending hugs to The Salsa Family today, especially to the little Salsa's who have to deal with something way to horrid for their tender sweet hearts.

Sorry about that.......you need to use carpenter cloth and completely surround the pen, encluding the top. Raccoons can eat through chicken wire.....Gyll

  39. That just breaks my heart. I'm sure you are as upset as the girls must be. I am so sorry for all of you.

  40. Oh M3 - I'm so very sorry about this. Living in an environment similar to yours, I'm surprised a raccoon would do this. They usually go after duck eggs (they took out a whole nest of 9 here) - but not birds this size. Do you have evidence this was a raccoon? This kind of destruction here is usually the work of a bobcat or coyote or hawk. Even a large owl. I'm so sorry. This is just awful for all of you.

RIP Midnight and Golden. Big bummer. The night (early morning) I left for Guate to visit C. on a preview trip, the darn racoons were standing in my backyard pond munching on the koi, ugh. It was sickening. I feel for you.
On another note, if you want a mini-adventure like your indoor water park hotel, check out this local venue I went to last Sunday. Fun!

  46. Are you kidding me? Raccoons? I hate those animals! They did major damage to our pool and our grass. I can't believe they will hurt another animal like that. I'm so sorry.

This breaks my heart. I am so sorry. There is a trap you can set to catch the raccoon and then you could take him far away to release him if you wanted to. Just a thought. The traps don't hurt them I don't believe. You could probably get one at any feed store type place. Maybe you might want to try again with new ducklings if you could get rid of that coon.
In any case, we are so sorry!
