Even though it is WAY past her bedtime. And someone else is busy browsing the internet on his laptop to see whether folks prefer Nooks or Kindles. He flies a lot and wants a good traveling solution. If you’ve got an opinion on one or the other, please share!
PS: Your trips down memory lane in the entries on our Hostess giveway are so dang funny!! I keep reading new ones and yelling to TubaDad to come see. For the folks who have mentioned their extremely precise method of eating HoHos, I did that too! And so did my little brother. We’d carefully peel open the tinfoil, eat off every bit of chocolate, then unroll it completely and eat the cream filling, then and only then eat the cake. Ah, good times.
How sweet and I am in love with both my new Kindle Fire and my old Kindle (the one with the keyboard) I love the e-ink and could not give it up for the Fire so I still use both. Although my sister in law has the Nook color and loves it too but I am a Kindle girl.
ReplyDeleteGet a copy of How to Eat Like a Child: And Other Lessons in Not Being a Grown-up by Delia Ephron if you want a delightful trip down memory lane. It is several decades old but timeless.
ReplyDeleteKindle fire! Its been great.
ReplyDeleteWe just downloaded the Kindle ap for our iPhones. Yeah, the screen is smaller, but it is nice not to have to tote around yet another electronic device! We have debated getting the Fires, but have only seen them in demo mode at the stores. I wish they actually had them connected to the net so you could give it a real test drive. I think they would be able to sell a lot more of them that way. Does anyone know why they are not available to actually try in stores?
ReplyDeleteKindle! Love the e-ink display and wouldn't want it any other way.
ReplyDeleteI have a Kindle and my husband has a Nook. Now that Kindle can be used within the library system, we're using them constantly. The only difference that we notice is that he must transfer library books via USB, while I get to do everything wirelessly. Be sure to do some research before you choose. There has been some suggestions that back lit screens and young developing eyes are not the best thing ever. As a matter of fact my husbands ophthalmologist told us that for reading, e-ink is preferable.
ReplyDeleteI have the Kindle app for my Android tablet and love it. I can get all my library books wireless on it. I have the Nook app, but haven't really used it. My stepmom recd a Nook for her birthday, so I might try it since I heard you can share books via it. Not sure if you can on the Kindle though also. Sorry I really wasn't of any help!
ReplyDeleteLove, love my Nook. Much prefer the original E-ink to reading on my I-Pad which does bother my eyes a bit. I too use the library to borrow books and love that feature.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on raising readers. My daughter and I love to follow the adventures of your family.
I'm a Kindle girl! I love Amazon. I also may or may not "side load" books on to mine to save on cost!
ReplyDeleteOh, and I prefer the e ink version for reading. I have a fire too and while its nice to have in bed to read with the lights off, the e ink versions win hands down for reading in any kind of light at all, especially outside/in the car!
ReplyDeleteGo with the Kindle! We love ours...your kids will love it to.
ReplyDeleteI love the Kindle! Been reading on one for 2 years and it's the best. I keep upgrading every time they come out with a new one and they just keep getting better and better. The battery life on the newest, touch screen is amazing. You can go to Europe, read the whole way there, read everyday while you're there, read the whole way home and not need to recharge that battery! I haven't tried the Fire, I prefer to be able to only read on my device....otherwise I think I'd get distracted and want to check my e-mail, etc. For the cost.....you can't beat it!
ReplyDeleteI love my KIndle Fire, I am not stuck using Barnes and Nobles interface with books like you are with the Nook. I can watch NEtflix on it. I use it for everything I can on my laptop and read books as well. I can not put it down I use it all the time. My laptop is now used for school work and bills mainly, and blogging :)
ReplyDeleteI love my Nook - I still enjoy spending time in bookstores, so I take advantage of the opportunity to read for free in store (1 hour free - no matter what book) with coffee so that I can peruse the shelves.
ReplyDeleteIf physical bookstores aren't as important to you I think they're generally interchangeable - but I'd go with the e-ink versions either way!
Well, since there's both a Nook Tablet and a Kindle Fire in our house, here's my take on it:
ReplyDeleteThe Nook is a bit better for reading books. I can easily sideload/download books from non-BN sites (several web-based, plus our local library). And I've got an SD card for local storage. I haven't run into any space issues for apps (they go to internal storage). And you can achive books/apps, which saves them via BN, but off your device. App selection is still a bit limited, but the BN app selection is growing pretty quickly. There is a microphone, along with a physical volume button (lacking on the Fire) - with the microphone and a selection of kids books, you can record your voice reading the book for the kids to listen to later.
The Fire seems better for apps, and Amazon's app store has a huge selection, plus there's a usually paid app for free each day. If you have been using the app store from an Android phone, any apps you've gotten on the phone are available for your Fire (with a few exceptions - some aren't compatible). There is no SD slot, but cloud storage is available. If you have a Prime account on Amazon, there is a good selection of videos via Amazon Streaming. (And both devices can use NetFlix). The Fire interface is more limited (I can use different wallpapers on the Nook; the Fire doesn't give that option, AFAIK).
e-book prices are pretty much the same on both devices, with a fair
selection of freebies, if you search a bit in the store.
Basically, like Apple devices of all flavors, you are in a walled garden for either the Nook or Fire. The layout & size of the garden varies, but the goal is for you to spend money with them, instead of anywhere else, so they are locked down (well, you can root 'em, but that's a hassle & voids your warranty). Both seem fine for web-browsing, but are WiFi only (no 3G or 4G available).
I have heard the Nook customer service is horrible, horrible, horrible from several different sources.
ReplyDeleteI love my iPad for all applications, including reading. I am planning to add a Nook, too, as it does not require connection to the internet. I suggest a traveling man have both.
ReplyDeleteLuv luv luv my Kindle Fire.
ReplyDeleteI love my Kindle! I have an iPad that I love for traveling too, but for reading I love the e-ink on the Kindle. Mine is a first generation and the battery lasts forever with the 3G/wifi off. I'm an ex-pat, so I love being able to get English-language books whenever and wherever I want. In theory I love that I can get on an airplane with just my Kindle and not a whole backpack full of books (I'm a fast reader) but I also travel with a 4 year old and a 1 year old so I'm either entertaining kids on planes or sleeping when they're sleeping.
ReplyDeleteLOVE my Kindle! Don't care for the Nook's clear screen (nor would I like to read on the Kindle Fire's clear screen, or an iPad, for that matter!).
ReplyDeleteYou can check out library books on Kindle and if you join Pixel of Ink, you are offered about a dozen FREE books each and every day! The battery life on my Kindle is crazy good (about a month between charges). And, the piece de resistance, TubaDad can also download FREE kids books on his Kindle through the Juvenile/Young Adult section of Pixel of Ink! Oh and Kindle customer service, based on the only time I ever had to contact them, rocked.
Kindle with e-ink all the way. I too have an ipad and never use it for reading. The newest Kindle touch is small and lightweight--I carry it in my purse. My husband had a Nook and had some trouble with the software--he has recently switched to a Kindle touch and likes it WAY better.
ReplyDeleteI have lots of friends who own both and they all love them. He will be happy with either one, I believe! :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE my kindle fire!!! Perfect size, weight amazing screen and color. Did I say I LOVE IT??? Oh yes I do!
ReplyDeleteI have a kindle 2. I think a kindle fire is good for people who don't have an ipad, but it is not anywhere near the realm of the i pad. The screen of the standard kindle is perfect for a sunny beach, or even to read in the car. The pages turn quickly, books are downloaded in less then a minute, and I have bought and downloaded books in europe as well as the US.
ReplyDeleteI have an I phone, so I can get apps, and on the internet with that. I love the kindle because of the long battery life and the ability to read it in any light. 9/10 times the books that I am looking for are availible on the kindle.
I hope this helps
I have a Kindle Fire which I bought specifically to be able to read in bed and not wake my husband, which the Kindle does well because a) it's smaller than an iPad, and b) it's backlit (unlike a regular Kindle for which you need light). Very pleased with my decision. An iPad might be better for other things, but for reading, I prefer the Kindle Fire.
ReplyDeleteIf supporting your local, independent bookstore is important to you, then do NOT buy a kindle. Go Nook: http://bookpeopleblog.wordpress.com/2011/11/28/a-few-things-you-should-know-before-buying-an-ereader/
ReplyDeleteI have the Kindle and LOVE LOVE LOVE it - my husband has a Kindle Fire and he loves that for playing online but uses his regular kindle for reading. I love the E-Ink technology
ReplyDeleteI love that I don't have to hook it to my computer to download my books - plus there are ooooodles of free books to download on the Kindle. Never tried or played with a nook so I can't give an opinion.
Well lots would depend on if you want to buy books to keep them forever or check them out on your e-reader from your local library. So the first trip would be to the library website to see what you have access to for free. Then, you need to know that the publishing world is not quite sure what to do with e-readers. Penguin for instance is hassling libraries and making checking out books difficult and cumbersome.
ReplyDeleteIf you want to buy, I love my Kindle. Easy to use, so much so that I download my textbooks for my masters program on it for a great price. Battery lasts crazy long if you turn off the wireless and lighting is better for ahem, older eyes.
So check out your library, talk to the librarians to see what e-readers they support and then read away. Oh, and no e-readers don't float. Trust me on this. :)
Both of my parents and I have nooks and we love them. My parents are more technology-challenged and they had no trouble learning to use the nook. We have also had great customer service experiences at our local Barnes and Nobel. My experience has been that it is easy to get books from a wide variety of sources with the nook. There are websites for public domain books on the internet, plus the downloads from the public library. No matter what device you choose, you should definitely get an e-ink screen. It feels just like reading a real book and will not hurt your eyes.
ReplyDeleteI am spoiled and have both a Nook and a Kindle. At the time I bought them, library books were not available for the Kindle. That is the only reason I bought the Nook. Of course, about 3 months after I bought it, library books became available for the Kindle. I highly recommend the Kindle over the Nook. The e-ink is better on the Kindle so the words show up better. The Nook seems kind of clunky and I have a harder time navigating it. It just doesn't seem as well laid out as the Kindle. And the battery on the Kindle far outlasts the battery on the Nook. We also have an Ipad and I love it, but I don't like to read on it for long periods of time. The screen hurts my eyes. So for that reason I don't recommend the Kindle Fire or Nook Color. The e-ink on the regular Kindle is just like reading a book. I can't say enough good things about my Kindle. The only thing I would do differently would be to buy the 3G version, not just the WiFi version, because I would like to be able to buy books anywhere.
ReplyDeleteLove my library card!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love my Kindle. E-Ink is the best. No glare - easy on the eyes. Not giving it up for anything!
ReplyDeleteKindle Fire, baby!
ReplyDeleteKindle, hands down! I looked EXTENSIVELY for months before I finally got one. I LOVE mine!! I read library books all the time, and love that I can do that on my Kindle. And, as a bonus--no more late fees for my library books! :) I love the e-ink...I read all the time at the lake in the summer. At night, I tuck a small flashlight under my pillow and read so that the (limited) light doesn't bother my hubby. I have the Kindle app on my phone, but prefer my Kindle. We bought my mom one for her 70th birthday, and my dad said he's never seen her so quiet! :) She reads all the time now. He was so impressed with the whole thing we got him one for Christmas...
ReplyDeleteHave the girls starting reading any of the "Little House on the Prairie Books"? I am a reader and love when little ones get hooked right away!
ReplyDeleteA Grandma to Many
We have four Kindle's and one Nook at our house and I really prefer the Kindle. It is easier to use and I like the Kindle library better than the Nook.
ReplyDeleteI haven't dealt with the physical Kindle, I just downloaded the iPad app (which is awesome) but buying Kindle books is just so easy and quick that if I were to invest in an ereader, I'd go straight for the Kindle.
ReplyDeleteI love my Kindle! I much prefer the e-ink to a backlit screen.
ReplyDeleteWithout reading the previous remarks to see if I'm just repeating what's been said - but the Kindle is the way to go as far as I'm concerned. The e-ink is easy on the eyes and if you've got any other kind of tablet or smartphone, you've got the extras that the nook offers already, so why spend the money on those?
ReplyDeleteI love my Kindle too! Looks like I'm in good company. I have a Kindle cover with a built-in reading light that is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteLove my Kindle Fire. Bought my husband and son one for Christmas and loved it so much I bought one for myself! Free apps everyday and lots of free books. I also heard that Amazon worked out exclusive deals with some book companies so their e-books would only be available in the Kindle format.
ReplyDeleteNot to sound like a broken record, but definitely get the Kindle! Being able to read it outside was super important to me and Amazon will always have my heart!
ReplyDeleteHow funny! I ate my lunch box HoHo's the exact, same way!
