How do you teach a kid to whistle?

We've tried Googling it, having them imitate us, looking in a mirror, watching videos on YouTube... And they're still befuddled.

In other news, I received this brutally honest apology note from Ro (click picture to enlarge):DSC_0089LR

We also had noodle soup and noodle hair again today, but without our third noodler, Hannah. It was a little sad, but still cute:DSC_0091LRDSC_0114LRDSC_0112LRDSC_0139LRDSC_0141LR

This next picture actually says a lot about us: Ro is using both hands to eat her lunch because she loves noodle soup and mandarin oranges so much that she can’t choose which to eat first, we’re using straw bowls so they can get every last drop, we had tons of cubed watermelon left over from the 4th of July party so we froze it and are using it as ice cubes (love!), the dishes still haven’t been put away from last night and are in the sink and on the counter, Ro likes to add a flower to her noodle hair because it’s “fancy,” and, well, I think that’s about it...DSC_0129LR

I’m trying out my Mother’s Day camera (it was backordered), so bear with me, there might be a few too many pictures in the near future. Heh. Most of these are SOOC (straight out of camera) with no editing.

Have them suck in air between the lips until they make a whistle, then exhale without moving the lips. It seems to be easier to make a sound this way.

  2. That is such a funny note!!! I laughed really hard!!!!
Whistling thing - I remember spending years trying to learn to whistle. I still can't whistle. Some people said it was easier with gum in your mouth, some tried using fingers. Nothing worked. I wish the girls luck, I really hope the girls have better luck than I did.

  3. You should have asked H2 and S2 to teach your girls while we were there. They love to whistle and would have enjoyed teaching Ro and Ree!

    1. Wish I had thought of it!! Those two would have had them whistling in no time.

  4. Well Happy Mother's Day ; ) What camera did you get? I LOVE their dresses and their noodle hair!!!

  5. I 2nd the sucking air in instead of blowing air out. Same lip puckering technique, just suck air in through your lips instead of blowing it out.

  6. OMG....did you melt when you read that note?

Also I want to know what camera you got so I can put it on my wish list!

  7. Hard to be mad when you get such a wonderful apology note. TOO CUTE. Just remember that you won't always have furniture that looks like six year old twins live with you. ;-)

  8. That is the best apology I have ever come across. You are lucky that Ro's brutal honesty resulted in such a beautiful moment, and memory. SS had a brutal honesty moment two weeks ago, while we were waiting for our van to be detailed. It was very hot, and I was thankful for the AC, until a woman entered the waiting area, and sat next to us. My very loud daughter stated, "Mama, that woman has a very bad smell." Some idiot seating near us could not contain his laughter. I began to pray that the big one hit at that very moment, and the building would crush us, putting an end to my embarrassment.

Have you tried making agua fresca with your leftover watermelon? It's very easy, place watermelon and water in a blender, blend, add sugar or Splenda. You end up with a yummy summer drink. We also make it with strawberries. My husband, who has a fruit phobia, can't get enough of them.

Jumping on the curiosity bandwagon regarding your new camera.

  9. We're in the whistling camp too... It's been our summer project (along with tying shoelaces) but to no avail.
The girls look so different from each other in these pics although dressed the same!

    1. I think so too!!! Sometimes they don't even look related to me.

Good luck to you guys on the whistling and shoe tying. If it helps at all, Ro and Ree tie their shoes in two different ways, so maybe try different methods and one will stick.

Can you share the noodle soup recipe? My kids are addicted to the noodle cups... haven't tried ramen yet. Would love ideas!

    1. No recipe for this one, it's a Vietnamese vegetarian soup that my friend buys for us by the case at her fave Asian store when she finds it. Apparently they don't always have it, so she stocks up when she finds it.

  11. Oh no!! She wroted on the couch? Oye!!

My jet lagged little one is still awake at almost midnight, looking at these pics with me. Her first question was, 'Where am I?' and 2nd comment was Ree Ree using my blue bowl. Heh!

Pics look great! How are you enjoying the new camera? Throw as many pics our way as you want. I know we'll enjoy them!!

    1. Using my blue bowl - ha! Classic!!!

Liking the new camera so far, but I've really only taken these few pics with it. Spent quite a bit of time today going from store to store looking for a kiddie archery set -- parents of Brave fanatics will understand...

    2. If you find an archery set please post... my youngest is HUGE on Brave. We saw it on Sunday and on the way out of the theatre she asked when Brave 2 would be out and last night she asked if we could download the movie from itunes yet. ;-)

If you have a friend who is a speech therapist she or he can teach you/the girls.

Love Ramen soup as much as your girls do! Do you add vegys and pieces of chicken?

    1. Hm, I'll have to think if we do!

This soup is a Vietnamese vegetarian soup that my friend gets for us by the case. It has seaweed in it, but no other veggies I think. We add tofu sometimes, but no meat.

Sounds delicious. I'm going to have to look for it in an Asian market or the Asian section of our large market.

The reason I suggested a speech therapist is that whistling is also the positioning of the tongue.

  13. The hair is seriously Amazing! Poor Maylin, she has a mother that is so hair-inept.

Love the outfits. The coup looks amazing!

Whistling just came to Maylin after a lot of practice and following me. It took a few months and then it came. Maybe time is your solution? But then, I really never got it....

Tess taught herself to whistle last year but then stopped for a while and now she's forgotten!

  17. It has been quiet a while since dropping by... you suddenly popped into my mind and thought I would drop on by to see how things were... I cannot believe how much the girls have grown... wow... I remember the day you were waiting for your referral call... hope life is good... seems so... take care..
