Stepping off the hamster wheel

We thought PanPan might be getting a little bored going around and around and around in that wheel to nowhere. (translation: we really just wanted to amuse ourselves.) So we zipped down to Tap Plastics and Home Depot and got a whole bunch of tubes and connectors that are kind of like hamster-sized Tinker Toys. Now we can build our very own hamster run, in different configurations each time, and boy does it make us laugh.

We drilled a bunch of holes and like to randomly drop treats into the holes for him to find (I swear he makes surprised faces when he comes around a corner and finds one):DSC_2413LRDSC_2419LR

And we shriek with laughter when the hamster gets low to the ground and flies through the maze:DSC_2458LR

Here’s another configuration. Hee!:DSC_2566LR

Hi buddy:DSC_2472LR

Oh yeah! I’m not sure who’s having the most fun with our new hamster run, the human designers or the rodent.

As long as this is supervised I would not have a problem with it. But it does not look there is adequate air space for the hamster to breathe so I would be concerned if the hamster was left in it.

    1. I was just thinking the same thing. Might want to get a few more of the air vents.

As a mom to (kids) and to Guinea Pigs.. he's a sweet boy not a (rodent) ;) I love this, He looks so cute your girls must spoil him I am sure. Guinea pigs dont tube run :( well mine dont so in spring and summer depending the weather they get some playtime running in the back yard. To the person up top. He is getting air because they said they drilled holes in the tubing. And this looks more fun and less costly then ones they sell at a pet store. Pan Pan is adorable.

  5. How darn cute, M3. It must be great exercise for him and the girls can watch his every move. He can breathe, get treats and then come out and crash in his pad. What a life!

I love it, lucky kids and PanPan for your ingenuity in constructing this home made hamster trail.

I see an arm wrapped in a bandage I hope her arm is okay.

    1. Oh shoot, I meant to mention that and then was so gleeful over the tube system that I forgot -- Ro is just fine (thank you for asking!), they were playing doctor right before this and Ro had a "broken arm" and Ree had a "broken ankle." Poor dears. ;-)

  10. Eagerly awaiting a video of Pan Pan doing the low to the ground run! I'm
a mean mommy and won't get Marin a rodent. When Matthew and I were discussing the horrors of a real live rat spotted in a local pizza place, Marin was quite upset. He says, "But rats are pretty and nice. They are animals!" Ahhh, to see the world from a 3 1/2 year old's point of view.

Glad to hear that the bandages are purely for fun! I was wondering what had happened!

  12. I'll give you all kinds of credit for allowing the girls to have a rodent. You are a MUCH (much, much!) better mom than I am! A dog and two kitties are more than enough for this mom!

    1. No way, you're doing AWESOME! A dog and two kitties? That is tons of work and my girls would LOVE to have a doggie. This little hamster is just so easy.
