Can birds smell?

After moving all four rooms of furniture last week, our office ended up in the nice, sunny downstairs room at the end of the hall. Perfect! I hauled out the old bird feeder, filled it to the brim with tempting morsels of seed, and planted it right outside my window. And waited for the hordes of grateful wildlife to descend. And waited. And waited. And Waited! What the heck? Is it too sunny? Are the seeds too lowbrow for the birds in this neighborhood? (I bought them at Long's Drugstore.) Is the feeder too close to the nearby bushes? Are they offended by the garbage cans that are a few feet away? What??? Or could it be that they smell danger gleefully peering at them from behind the shutters... Click here to see the non-cropped version of that photo at left. Hmmm. Might have to slightly rethink the office furniture arrangement.
