Another new tradition: cookie dough for breakfast on the day daddy comes home

Ro and Ree think this is a pretty good tradition to start. It sounds silly, but there's actually a reason for it -- if we always put something concrete (and fun) on the calendar for the day daddy comes home from a business trip, the girls know for sure that he's coming back. DSC_9731 DSC_9740 DSC_9738 DSC_9724 I told my mom, who should be used to this kind of stuff by now, and she said "Oh my word... you're not going to put that on the blog, are you?!" Um, guess so. Heh. PS: I just put up a new Q&A in the left sidebar over there. This answer talks about what TubaDad does to bring home the bacon, what I used to do, and not being a great mom (a topic which I really want to spend more time on and will do soon).

  1. You are such a fun Mom!! Ro and Ree will love this tradition and you will all laugh about it when they are older (even your Mom).

It probably has the same amount of sugar as some cereals so eat up!

I appreciated your ideas on how to make a business trip pass. We're currently doing a long distance commute & I think we'll try some things next week to make the week seem not so long.

Oh, I do remember having to leave a little baggie of cookie dough in the fridge if no one was home when I was baking.

  4. Hi guys, I just updated the sidebar with a new Q&A. Check it out if you feel like it. All comments before this one were left before the new Q&A.

  5. Thanks for sharing that information (your sidebar Q & A). I've wondered those exact questions, but never wanted to ask seeing as I figured it was too personal.

I think all Mom's can have more patience at times -- although I don't consider myself having a short fuse, I envy you for being "fun" with the girls.

And there's nothing more yummy than raw cookie dough...!

  6. I want to come and live at your house!!

  7. Well, you seem very pulled together with all your photos and blogging. How do you find the time to blog. I'm so far behind because each time I sit down to the computer my daughter wakes up early from her nap or demands attention away from the computer. And I continually forget to take pictures!

So aside from maybe serving a little too much bacon in your household it seems like you are doing a bang up job, especially being outnumbered! :)

  9. You rock, M3!

But seriously .. how do the girls handle it when you have to say NO to having cookie dough for breakfast. The reason I try hard to stick to the "rules" around food is that I don't want Maya to be crushed day in - day out when I have to tell her that she can't have xyz for breakfast EVERYday.

How do you make is so special that they know it's not a "norm" ... or is it? ;-)

  10. Cold pizza, dough and ice cream, that is a favorite at our house.

  11. Oops, let me clarify. Cole pizza, dough and ice cream for breakfast is a fav at our house.

  12. I am just glad to know there are people like you in the world!

  13. Thanks Michelle. You rock too! :-) Cookie dough for breakfast is definitely not the norm (well maybe the norm for me, but not for the girls, haha).

Anyhow, even though it's a big treat, the girls won't even think to ask for it next time. I never stopped to think why, but if I had to guess why, I'd say:

    1. Because it was tied to a specific event. So if it's not daddy-comes-home day, they don't even think to ask for a repeat of the treat.

    2. Ro and Ree are so dang busy that they never think about food (they never stop moving, never ever ever ever)(oh man I am so tired...)

    3. We tell them no all the time and are totally heartless and nonbudging about it. They're pretty used to us saying "nope" "not a chance" "not going to happen babe" or that type of thing, and know to just move on.

Who knows. Maybe it's a little of all three things or something different entirely.

  14. Hey copperdog,

It's hard! The only time I can safely blog is when the girls are sleeping or someone else is here with them (like my mom or dad). I've learned the hard way that they can sense if I'm near a keyboard and immediately start plotting something (I wish like heck that I was kidding). Anyhow, that's why almost all of my blogging takes place during naptime (early afternoon) or around 10pm. Sigh...

They're sleeping right now actually. :-)

    You are a great mom!

Casey has an M&M first thing every morning (if she got into her PJs, brushed her teeth, and went to bed without complaing the night before). So she wakes up saying "I good girl for daddy. I want M&Ms." So when I hear you're serving cookie dough for breakfast it makes me feel better.

I think I'm going to start eating cookie dough for breakfast on the days TubaDad comes home too.

  18. Sounds like a great tradition! The problem will be the timing of when to purchase the cookie dough during TD's absence in order for there to be some left for b'fast. What fun!!

  19. Great tradition. I'll suggest the same here - with one slight modification. I think the cookie dough should be for the DAD who comes back from a rough business trip...

(oh, and I'm surprised just how much dough is left in the container...)

  20. OH MY SOUL!!! People after my own heart! I didn't know there were others like me out there!

Enjoy your visit with Catherine! We're so jealous that she gets to come out and see you and enjoy the California sunshine!

I SO want to do that!(eat cookie dough for breakfast)

  22. Our girls have exactly the same taste in PJs. Nearly every time you post jammie picks I chuckle and think, Hey! Anna has those PJs! She loves the polk a dot ones in these pics. Although she does call them polk-a-gots.

I sure wish *I* could have cookie dough for breakfast! Or lunch! Or dinner! I'd gain 12 pounds!

(I am cracking up at the anon poster trying to warn you about the hazards of eating cookie dough. We are SO guilty of the very same thing and LOVE IT! Cookie dough for EVERYONE!!!)

Thanks for answering my question so quickly! I was pretty on target with TubaDad but I had you pegged for a teacher. I have three daughters and have given myself timeouts before too. Our kids need to know we make mistakes. I think we can model behavior on what to do when mistakes are made, when you're mad, etc. I'm just entering the teen years and I hope to come out with my sanity! Thanks again, Kara

When I saw the photo of the girls with the cookie dough container I thought, mine is bigger! For true addicts and for you since you have to share get the gigantic tub at Costco. Since its cold in the Chicago I prefer mine baked, so so good, warm chocolate chip cookies....
    Take care, lg

  28. I'm so glad it's not just mine that start plotting when I get near the computer...I was beginning to think I was doing something wrong! I did manage to catch up a little today but hubby was home and I bribed her brothers to play with her for a while. (7 & 10 year olds need bribing!)Love your blog! :)
