Hey that's cool

I just got an email from Scholastic (!) saying that I was a finalist for the Scholastic Parent & Child magazine Mommy Blogger Awards. As Ro has been saying lately "Wow weezers!" Scholastic Mommy Blogger award If you feel like voting for Salsa in China (or any of the other blogs), cast your vote here. It's one-click voting, no sign-ups required or anything like that, and voting is open through March 13. They'll feature the five winners on the Scholastic web site and in the June/July 2009 issue of Parent & Child. To whoever nominated me and whoever votes, I'm sending you a big thank you and some gritty-but-awesome Ro and Ree hugs -- they're playing in the sandbox right now and, since I'm daring to type on the computer instead of refereeing the activity, the amount of sand actually staying in the box is questionable... Cheers! PS: I've got four posts started and hanging out there in my drafts folder just mocking me, so please let me know which one you'd prefer to see next and I'll buckle down and finish it: 1. Chocolate taste-testing results 2. Talking about adoption is hard 3. I'm not a great mom 4. You're watching American Idol, aren't you?

  3. Hey that is cool! My vote is in, hope you win!!
Oh and I would like to know about the "adoption" one.
Not sure if you are talking about "talking about it with friends" or "talking about it with your girls" but either one is hard and it will be hard for me when the time comes to tell my little one.
I actually stopped going out with some friends because I was introduced like "the one who adopted from China."

Congrats- I have never been brave enough to leave a comment but have been reading your blog for a long time & love it! So I was more than happy to vote for you. I also would love to see the American Idol post--or any of your post for that matter. My DD is 4 and loves when I am reading your blog, she loves to see your girls and always says "Mommy, I wish I could be friends w/those 2 pretty girls".

Topics 2 and 3 both for sure! We are really starting to see all little ways the conversation can lead into adoption, the doors are there, but what an intricate can of worms. Love your blog, but you always seem so in control and on the sunny side.

I am tying this while holding my brand new little (sleeping) girl and I'm already finding myself stumbling over the language of explaining to people how she got here. (And I've had YEARS to prepare for this, you'd think I would have worked it out by now.)
I'd love to hear what you have to say on the topic.

congrats ... my vote is in ... like many other folks commenting here, I'd love to see your thoughts on talking about adoption. When I meet folks who mention they've adopted (or their child is of a different race) - I think back to your post about the "she thinks i'm her mommy" lady in the park and how much that snide comment hurt. i usually end up casually using mommy/daddy in a sentance before leaving (i.e., your mommy is keeping you nice and cozy today). I have mentioned a few times that a close friend of mine adopted, but suspect that may prompt eye-rolling among some parents. Would love to know more about talking about adoption from your perspective.

  65. Congrats on your nomination! You absolutely have my vote! I just went to my home study group yesterday and there was another couple there adopting from China and I, of course asked, "Do you read Salsa in China? It's my favorite blog!"

  69. I have been a LONG time reader of your blog and I think it's FANTASTIC that you're up for winning an award (BTW...I just voted for you)! I've been wanting to adopt from China for YEARS now, but by the time we are actually getting to that point where we can afford it, I had health issues come up. So now it's questionable as to whether or not we'll be able to adopt. In the mean time, thanks for sharing your stories with us. I LOVE THEM!
