A new daddy-comes-home tradition
We always have a special treat for breakfast when TubaDad comes home from a business trip. It gives the girls something to look forward to and also reinforces that he's actually coming home since we've got concrete plans for that day. Our tradition used to be cookie dough for breakfast. Mmmmm, that was a lovely tradition. But since the freaky Nestle-cookie-dough recall for e-coli, we've moved to food that's a little safer, but no less thrilling. Now, on the day that TubaDad comes home, we eat contraband sugary cereal for breakfast. Wheeeeee! And this time I threw in some new little straw/bowls that I found at the grocery store. The girls were psyched.
Here's a video of the joy. Sorry it is sooooooooo long. I tried to cut it down many, many times but the audio kept getting out of sync, so I gave up and just left the blasted thing as is.

After breakfast I sent the girls upstairs to get dressed and told them their outfits were already laid out on the floor (they were extras from our beach trip and I didn't feel like rehanging them). The pink zebra top goes with the animal print shorts, while the white top with multicolored flowers goes with the dotty shorts. But the girls thought that clearly they went better the other way, so they traded. Then they accessorized a little until the looks met with their approval and put the lunchboxes just so for a "pwitty" (pretty) background for the photo. Funny girls. Here's our group-effort Fashion Friday photo:
Have a great weekend!
(Just realized I didn't say who was who. It's just that they look so different to me I forget to mention it sometimes. In the cereal pics Ro is left and Ree is right, and in the fashion pic Ree is left and Ro is right.)

A def. fun way to welcome home Dad!!
ReplyDeleteKeep smilin!
Can't get the video to work. Any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I love how they put so much thought into which sugar cereal they are going to eat. It really is a big decision!!!
ReplyDeleteGot the video to work and it is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteThose are our favorite bowls. Such a better way to drink the "sugar milk" at the end of the cereal.
ReplyDeleteI love the dotted socks with the animal print...
ReplyDeleteI don't think my girls really have a "Papa comes home" tradition... need to prod K2 about that.
Rest assured - for those of us who don't see them every day, they are still somewhat easy to mix up. So the instructions on who is who are appreciated.
I feel so guilty, Emma eats sugar cereal anytime she wants. I mean, if they can't eat it now when can they? The good thing is that she is not much into them but we still buy them for her, she likes Raisin Bran better.
ReplyDeleteI love those bowls! I grew up with those and Emma got hers about two years ago and she only eats cereal in them. They are also good for ice cream when Emma is in the mood for it. Here's to wonderful memories with those fun bowls!
cute shoes, what are they?
ReplyDeleteFROSTED FLAKES? NO WAY! When TD comes home, gimme a call before breakfast. I'll be RIGHT OVER!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE KelFF.

DQ Mountain Girl: The girls have on Rocket Dog shoes. I got the first pair at Stride Rite and then ordered the second pair from Zappos.
ReplyDeleteMmmmm love Frosted Flakes!
ReplyDeleteCan your mom and dad tell the girls apart?

I just picked up a copy of Parent & Child that my daughters kindergarten teacher passed out on the first day of school. And what do you know, I found your blog in there! You have a great blog, and I just wanted to let you know that I am adding you to my blog roll so that I can keep up with new post!
ReplyDeleteThe girls are just so precious!!!
Congrats on the feature in the magazine!
Blessings!!
Okay, where did you get the bug tatoos? My daughter would love those! Too cute (the girls and the tatoos).
ReplyDeleteSheryl: Good question! My mom can tell the girls apart about 90% of the time, my dad a little less than that. I'm thinking he relies more on the bracelets, but I'd have to let him answer to be sure.
ReplyDeletejochi33: The tattoos are from Oriental Trading Company and are called Nifty Nature tattoos. My cousin got a bunch of cool stuff from them and filled up a pinata for the kids in PA.
Have you heard of this eggless recipe for choc chip cookie dough? http://jas.familyfun.go.com/recipefinder/display?id=15116
ReplyDeleteIt is made to be eaten "raw". I've frozen it in bite-size balls, then used it as an ice cream topping, as a mix-in for homemade cookie dough ice cream, or I just pop one or two in my mouth every time I pass the freezer! :) This might be a way you can bring back the cookie dough tradition, although the sugar cereal is fun too!
Can I ask what application you use to edit video? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteAnon: I could just kiss you!!!! I am printing that recipe out this minute and I think the girls and I think our old tradition might be back!
ReplyDeleteMeghan: I used to use Windows MovieMaker, which I loved. But we can't get it to work with the new format of videos that my little point and shoot camera takes, so now I'm using Pinnacle VideoSpin (really cheap and really basic), which you can download from the internet. I've never had any trouble with it before today, so maybe my video was just too long of a file for it to handle? Who knows... I'll try it again for the next one.
Very cute!! We have those bowls as well but in blue!!! The kids love them!!!
ReplyDeleteA possible post/question: I have identical twin brothers and can easily tell them apart. I'm good with other twins too, even those I don't see too often, like at church. I cannot tell Ro and Ree apart and it drives me crazy!! If I saw them in person it would help but I doubt that will ever happen. Help a girl out...how do they look so different to you? Thanks! kara
ReplyDeleteMy kids loved those straw bowls. We wore them out so they were recycled but the other day they saw in the store and asked if we could buy them again - they are 12 years old! I guess the fun never gets old.
ReplyDeleteI love their styles. So much fun!
To me, it looks like Ro has lost some weight, and now looks more like Ree. M3, is that the case, or is it just me?
ReplyDeleteWe have the same bowls in red and blue and Sarah loves them....actually I think Nick does too, but don't tell him I said that:)
ReplyDeleteLove the way the put the outfits together.....I keep sayin' they are fashion designers in the making!!
WHOO hoo....I just read the comment about the magazine....I had no idea you were featured, that is fantastic...CONGRATS!!
Lisa
Great outfits- what fun to eat out of such fancy bowls.
ReplyDeleteYay! Glad I could help! I hope the recipe works out for you. Nestle Tollhouse is still my fave but I don't trust it now unless I make it myself. But no worries with the eggless version! Enjoy!

I totally get the girls outfit choice! I think the white monkey and and dots outfit would have been a bit boring (too much white), so the girls definitely made the right choice.
ReplyDeleteYou are so funny! You are a candy fanatic family, yet fortified cereal is considered a treat. My family is just the opposite. My kids could eat cereal three meals a day if I'd let them and candy is considered a treat. Love the bowls! And the adorable zebra shorts. Keep on keepin' on! (But I'm a still little upset you didn't break Cafrin's news on your blog.)
ReplyDeleteOh wow! Look how grown up your 'baby' girls are!! Totally adorable and what a fun new treat!! 'Daddy Comes Home' day is a ton of fun and what a wonderful way to get kiddies to drink the milk in the bottom of their bowls.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great day of celebration!
