Hard to believe, but our vacation is over

Somehow, today was our last day in Maui already. It doesn’t seem like it’s been a week, but the airline tickets say that we’re supposed to go home tomorrow and two of us are out of underwear, so I guess it’s true. Knowing our island time was running out, we squeezed every last drop of fun out of today.

We were out of the hotel room and on the road by 8:30 this morning (I know that’s probably laughably late for you early birds, but trust me it’s record-setting for the Salsa family). The morning’s destination was Whaler’s Village, where we made a beeline for that incredible warm sea and bobbed in the waves for hours. (Ro pink, Ree blue):IMG_0926LR IMG_0928LR IMG_0930LR IMG_0935LR IMG_0936LR IMG_0950LRIMG_0993LR IMG_0983LR IMG_0988LR

Ahhhhhhhhh.

Lunch was (naturally) at a fish place. And the sight of four Lava Flows (two loaded and two not) on the table made me grin. If anyone’s in the mood, we voted Kimo’s to have the best Lava Flows (although it was our worst dinner).IMG_1015LR IMG_1024LR

After lunch we did a little shopping, then headed back to “Minnow Beach” in front of our hotel where the girls (who have been missing their play structure) climbed, swung, and did chin ups over and over and over. They are so freaking strong it just amazes me. This kind of activity would land me in the hospital, no joke.IMG_1028LR

We had been out in the sun all day at this point and were starting to get red despite using an entire bottle of sprayscreen, so we strongly encouraged the girls to nap and hung out for a few hours in the cool hotel room. Then we scooted on down to Lahaina (wow that place is hopping!) and had dinner at Bubba Gumps. Never been there before (even though we’ve seen it a million times) and it was awesome! They are so kid friendly – a ton of toys in the foyer, cute kid dinners with jello, good seafood, just a really great last dinner. (Ree green, Ro orange)IMG_1034LR IMG_1038LR IMG_1044LR

By the way, somehow someway the lightning-fast girls always end up with the killer views in every restaurant. This one was no exception. Here’s what TubaDad and I were looking at:IMG_1039LR

While they gazed at this:IMG_1043LR

Last stop was the big old Banyan tree in downtown Lahaina. That thing is massive, and incredibly tempting for two little monkeys up way past their bedtimes:IMG_1050LR IMG_1054LR IMG_1056LR

Alrighty, that’s a wrap. This vacay is officially over. (sob) Thanks so much for all the awesome comments and suggestions. You guys deserve trophies for slogging through the incredible barrage of pictures that I posted. Please think good thoughts for safe and non-eventful travels tomorrow. Aloha.

Thanks for sharing this awesome trip with us. The photos are so gorgeous, I can almost smell that ocean breeze. I would love to hear more about what you brought on the plane to entertain the girls and also the "paper kits" you had in the hotel room. We are traveling this summer with our 4.5 year old daughter as well, so any tips are appreciated. Your rainy day list was a lifesaver this past winter...

When you talk about twins holding hands a lot it makes me think about twins that are separated at birth and go through life missing the clutch of their hand by a closer than close sibling. Wow!

  21. Oh wow, I didn't know y'all were in Maui! We went there ten years ago, and loved it. I don't know where y'all are staying, we stayed at the Westin Maui. We spent several days shopping in Lahaina, and I have a stupid picture of me sitting on that same Bubba Gump bench! Which Luau did you go to? The Old Lahaina Luau is the one we went to see, it was awesome! I would love to go back one day and take our girls.
Your pictures are gorgeous as always!

  22. Waaah! But I can tell you all had a wonderful time!

About 6 years ago, Rick and I stayed with a social worker and her husband (we were trying to adopt a little boy that was born there - didn't work out) and their house backed up on that golf course. It's beautiful there!

Don't you just LOVE that our kids love fish? Yum!

  23. What a great vacay for you all. And it brought back memories from my childhood (well teenage years. I have to tell ya, my mom drag us (ages 16, 21 and 24) to the Big Tree and we were so annoyed as she was so excited. Looking back at that now, I know I would react just as my mom did. Oh, parenthood. Welcome home.

  24. Hello, I am sorry and apologize if I have ever left a jealous-type of message on your blog board.(not mean, just a little jealous re:your winter&summer homes some months ago) It's rough and sometimes I really do get jealous and lose hope. Best wishes to you and your family!

  26. 8:30? That is pretty early for us too. I would have gone more for 9.

You had a great trip and have created this great urge to go there. We were planning a trip there over spring break, but when it came, money was gone. Sniff, sniff, sniff. Apparently I spent the vacay money on my kids vacations with out me! Next year it is mine!!!!

Welcome back to the real world!
