The cutest cupcakes I have ever seen (not even kidding)

We ♥ cupcakes in this house. I like them so much I even tried to have them at our wedding, but TubaDad shot me down saying “No way, it’s called wedding cake, NOT wedding cupcake.” Meh. Anyhow, the girls and I are nuts about them. I think it’s the deliciously high icing-to-cake ratio. Mmmm. Anyhow, when we saw these awesome reindeer cupcakes in the latest Family Fun magazine (which I really, really need a subscription to), we were 100% sold and couldn’t wait to try them out. Can you blame me?:DSC_0619LR

I didn’t think so! Our pajama-clad girls eagerly set about assembling their reindeer fleet.

They stirred with vigor:DSC_0559LR

They sampled with enthusiasm:DSC_0567LRDSC_0583LR

They snuggled on the couch and watched “The Flight Before Christmas” (their new fave Christmas movie, along with Prep and Landing) while the cupcakes baked and cooled:DSC_0590LR

They frosted with abandon:DSC_0592LR

They studied the picture and stuck on all the reindeer parts, and I’m telling you those cupcakes were criminally cute!! (Maggie’s is the top left, mine is the top right, Ree’s is the bottom left, and Ro’s is the bottom right):DSC_0603LRDSC_0598LRDSC_0606LR

We have a whole herd of them now, and hopefully will resist devouring them all so we can deliver a few to family and friends:DSC_0614LR

Ingredients: If you want to make your own reindeer cupcakes, you’ll need: cupcakes (any flavor for the cupcake and chocolate for the frosting), pretzels (don’t get the mini ones, you want the ones that are about 2.5” wide), red and brown M&Ms (I bought a humungo bag, picked out the red and brown ones and then ate the rest, sigh...), mini Nilla Wafers (this is important, get the MINI ones), white M&Ms that you can dot with black icing or sugar eyes (I used sugar eyes that I got on Amazon here), and Tootsie Roll midges.

How To: Then just bake and frost your cupcakes, stick on a Nilla Wafer for the snout, add a dot of icing glue and stick on a brown or red M&M nose, add two eyes, break a pretzel and put one big piece or two little pieces in as antlers (Family Fun tells you to break the pretzels in a very specific way that we were unable to duplicate – finally we figured out that it didn’t really matter what the pieces looked like, it was all good), use a third of a Tootsie Roll midge for each ear and squish the piece into an ear shape.

That’s it! You really can’t go wrong with these -- they are fun and delicious.

PS: I had to laugh at our somewhat-chaotic reindeer-assembly station. Hey no one ever said fun was neat and clean, right?DSC_0609LR

  2. When you share your baking pictures I notice a lot of box tops products, I hope you are saving those box tops for a school that participates in Boxtops4eduation.com they really do make a difference. They are only worth a dime, but they add up. Our school gets over $1600.00 per year.

  3. Oh cute! Shame they don't have half of the specific things for decorating over here but nice idea!

  4. Hey f&f, I've seen those box top notes on the boxes before but never knew what to do with them. What do I do?

I don't know where 'over here' is, but I am in the UK and am trying to think creatively about alternative products. I just can't think what we could use instead of the Nilla wafers, but I am sure if I wander down the biscuit aisle something will pop out at me.

  6. Ooooo those are so cute! I think I might make some of those for my students! Thanks for sharing!

  7. They are super cute cupcakes! Man, if we lived closer we would totally have to get our twins together for baking. What a hoot that would be! Merry Christmas!

  8. Cute cupcakes! Do you have a DVD of "Flight Before Christmas" and "Prep and Landing?" If so, where did you find it? We had P and L recorded on our receiver but lost it when we switched companies recently, my daughter was devastated. I have looked everywhere online, but can't find any DVDs, I don't know if they exist.

    Thanks

  9. I saw these in the Family Fun magazine too. We stuck with the Family Fun reindeer cookies from last year (Nutter Butter cookies decorated). They are super easy and kids and parents love them too. Between my mother and I, we have 5 magazine subscriptions and Family Fun is the only one that I read as soon as it arrives!

  10. Most public schools accept Box tops, just glue 10 of them onto a sheet of paper and send them to school. You can ask if the girls school does it, if not just save them till next year or whatnot, or donate them to the school of your choice. :)

  11. Hi Molly, we recorded them this year, so we've just been watching those ones over and over. We'll probably accidentally delete them too and then it will be a sad day!

Saw these on a magazine cover (forget which one) and took a picture for future reference. Yours turned out adorable. Well done!

Mrs. Claus likes Family Fun Magazine, too. She told me to read your blog post so that I would know what to bring you for Christmas.

  17. Here is the halloween cupcakes I made, they sounded like a pain, but they were suprisingly really easy to make! http://www.kitchendaily.com/2010/06/24/vampire-and-werewolf-cupcakes/

  18. Very, very cute ... you're always so clever coming up with things for the girls to make. You've given me inspiration to whip up something with my daughter this week (although she's a bit younger than Ro and Ree).

I noticed in the one picture, monitors on the counter ... I'm curious if you still use them in the girls' room? Sorry, off topic I know!

  19. Clip the box tops and save them. Try to find a school that collects them ( make sure the school is active about submitting them, many schools just let them expire)

If you need a taker you can always mail them to me, but I imagine a school in your area would be more than glad to take them.

OR if you are really brave you can start a program at the girls school. It is really easy. A bit labor intensive at times but all easy work. Go to www.boxtops4education for more information.

They are free money, you really do get 10 cents for every box top you clip.

  20. Our school collects those little square thingies on certain box tops. Maddy is really crazy about it and I can't tell you how many boxes she's mutilated in the pantry while extracting that little rectangular piece of treasure. If you saved them up and gave them to her, she would be so thrilled!

The cupcakes are just adorable. I have been following your blog since you were in China and love to see the girls outfits. I just wanted to let you and Wela know something. I was at an artisan show here in Ottawa, Canada and there was a lady who was selling "Wela Wear". She had the same idea and was selling little girl's dresses for $40. Wela should definitely get into business. She also had dresses made out of wool and knit sweaters....just an idea for Wela.

  22. Those are TOO CUTE. I'll definitely be trying them out soon!

  23. Cute! We made these too with our little ones! We didnt find mini nilla wafers so we used Neccos wafers. We also made eyes out of icing, just dabbed it on wax paper and froze it. The second time we used Good N Plenty for the eyes and just cut the white ones in half and shoved them in. These are so fun and such a hit at the Xmas party!

  24. so cute!! Too bad we don't have white m&M's north of the border. Will have to put that on my FL shopping list for next November and then hope I remember why it's there! :o)

Adorable reindeer and even cuter jammies!

  25. I made this cupcakes tonight with two of my students - these are too cute! I think everyone will love them tomorrow night at the party. THanks for the idea!

  26. OMG you have the best ideas ever. I have to tell you we did your marshmallow men but I didn't have all the right ingredients. They are not nearly as adorable as yours! A little alien looking! Still, I may have to give the reindeer cupcakes a-go!

Oh, and one you will like (if you haven't already done this)...we made sushi candy this weekend for a party. Also from Parenting magazine. Turned out real cute. Made with halved powdered donuts with swedish fish with green (if you can find enough) fruit roll ups wrapped around them. I steal so many ideas from YOU. I thought I might share something! :-)

  27. Hi Chrissie, I keep meaning to answer your question and then get sidetracked. We do have a monitor set up in the girls' room and use it occasionally (if the girls are restless or one of them is really hyper and we think she's going to wake up her sister). The other monitor isn't connected to anything, it just got stuck up on the counter during the move and hasn't been put away yet (wonder if it'll still be there in a year? Probably, sigh...)

    Hi M3

My 4 year old and I just made these adorable cupcakes... and they turned out great! It was so much fun to make these. I've been following your blog for so long. I have gotten sooo many fun craft and clothes ideas from your blog. Thank you so much! Happy Holidays to you and your family
