At the end of day 1 that Bowie song “Ch ch ch changes” was stuck in my head

The demolition progress has been exciting to see! These two little cupboard doors were the first thing to go:DSC_1169LRDSC_1177LRDSC_1174LRDSC_1197LR

After the “easy” stuff, the plastic went up and the real din began. There was drilling, hammering, wood being ripped, and all sorts of other weird equipment noises that I’ve never heard before.DSC_1212LR

I was in and out all day, and then went to pick up the girls from school. It was really quiet and really dusty when we got home. Kind of eerie. Our contractors had gone home, and Ro and Ree couldn’t resist peeking:DSC_1213LR

I believe they were saying “whoa....” here. Actually I probably was too:DSC_1218LRDSC_1230LRDSC_1232LR

So Day 1 saw the removal of all appliances, cabinets, and countertops (except for the island) and half of the top layer of floor tiles. Love seeing the progress! Oh, and we had rotisserie chicken, microwaved cheesy noodles, and baby carrots for dinner. Easing into using that temporary kitchen. Heh. Maybe next I’ll attempt something wild and crazy like a frozen pizza in the toaster oven. Look out!

  2. Lots of progress for Day 1! Maybe you should plan to get a cleaning service in after the project is complete. It will be easier to deal with the mess if you know you're not going to have to clean it all up. :)

    1. This dust is crazy! I have to clean a little each night just so we have a table and chairs to sit on. They finished chipping out all the mortar for the floors today, so hopefully we'll have a whole lot less dust from here on out. (Ha, I'm sure folks are laughing at my naivete!)

  3. So much progress in just 1 day! How long is the whole remodel anticipated to take?

Thanks for the updates. Fun to follow along!

And ya....I think there was a 'Whoa!' from here too!

I think she said 4 to 8 weeks in yesterday's blog.

    2. Yep, 4 to 8 weeks. Four would be lovely, but I'm betting it's closer to 8. We'll see!

  4. So fun! Be sure not to breathe the dust..."its been shown to cause cancer in the state of California." And don't worry, the clean up will be taken care of by the contractors. :)

    1. I kind of worry about the contractors -- that stuff just hangs in the air!

I've never seen the dismantling of a room. This is fascinating. I couldn't believe when I saw all the cupboards gone. The room looks huge now.

    1. It is cool!! I love seeing it.

It's funny too, because I pop in to take a few pictures when I'm back in the house and the contractors are used to me and say "don't forget this part, and check out this, or look what we found!" They're the same team that worked on our upstairs when we first moved in. Love them.

  6. You are a brave lady M3. I moved out when our kitchen was reno-ed and I only had Lily at the time. I ran and hid and didn't come back til it was, "all better".

  8. My kitchen after day one looked like a bomb went off....yours is neat in comparison. Get those contractors used to the flash going off!
My all favorite crock pot meal is so easy. It is pulled pork & all you do is throw a pork shoulder in the crock pot with a bottle of your favorite barbecue sauce...we like Sweet Baby Rays. Let it cook for about 8 hours then all you need is two forks to shred it. You can add a couple sliced onions if you like. Check out the McCormick seasoning packets for slow cooker meals...they have a great variety that only need a couple key ingredients. I relied on the washed & chopped vegies in the produce section & there are also frozen ready to cook potatoes that are not bad.
Good luck & keep up the updates...it's fun to have before & after pics. You wonder how you ever functioned in your kitchen before!

  9. Wow! A bit of an inconvenience, but you guys are pros at living from one adventure to the next! By the way, thanks for posting the FABULOUS Pinterest flower cupcake idea. My sweet pea and I had so much fun making those for the upcoming Easter weekend! We're going to display them in one of those "cupcake trees." I especially appreciate the way you post photos of each step in your projects, for those of us that are "visual learners!" Happy Easter! Kathy & Kayli

Can't wait to see the finished product! Did dust escape the closed of kitchen area too?

Did you ever post the finished twin palace?

    1. Oh yeah, it escaped! I'm guessing it would have been much much more if the plastic wasn't there.

I think I posted the finished twin palace but can't find it easily. I'll go back and look.
