Ree was on a roll yesterday

First, TubaDad made them some Spam for lunch, and Ro was extremely dubious about tasting it. Ree had no such compunctions, jamming some in her mouth then waving another forkful of meat product in the air and saying enticingly to her sister: "Try it Ro! It's gooder than you think it is!" DSC_4646LRs Then I headed out to spend time with some girlfriends and told Ro and Ree I'd bring them back a surprise. During dinner, my phone rang and it was Ree. She didn't beat around the bush, jumping right in with: "Mama, what you gots for us?" Um, well, I told her I had picked up a book for her and one for her sister. Apparently this answer was supremely unthrilling, because she responded: "Mama!!! We don't want books. We want candy. Worm candy." Then she hung up. Cracked me up. They were good books too, one of them, called Dewey: There's a Cat in the Library! I really like. The girls liked it too, luckily. But even if they hadn't, you know that I stopped after that phone call and bought two of those gross gummy worms too, just to hedge my bets.

  2. Spam is like a state dish in Hawaii. Really, they consider it almost sacred. Heh.

  3. Mmmmm, Spam! I like mine with sticky white rice wrapped in nori! I'll have to check out that book. BTW- We LOVE the monsters don't eat broccoli book! It's perfect for bedtime...not too wordy and very cute and fun!

Emma got hooked on Spam when we went to Hawaii. Spam and Eggs, yummy! We have spam at least once a month here. Spam Musubi is my favorite!

The grown-up Dewey book was really good, too. Dewey was an actual library cat and he had an amazing life story. I have to give a warning, though--it is sad at the end.

I know where Tuba Dad got the idea for Spam. As he was growing up there were times his dad was responsible for cooking dinner and it would usually be Spam. Like father, like son?

  6. Not a big fan of Spam here. My mom used to fry it up and make sandwiches out of it. My FIL would make Spamcakes. You fry a slice of spam on one side. When you flip it over to fry the other side, you pour pancake batter over it. You end up with a pancake with a fried Spam slice in the middle. Truly disgusting, but he loved it.

  9. HAHA, You know that cute Dewey book is true! My family is from the same town and all have stories about the "library cat". Good choice! And you have some cute little girls... darn rights they want candy. "Surprise" sure means candy at our house.

  10. You crack me up. I use to eat spam as a kid and she is right, "it is gooder than you think." Did sister ever try it?

Also, loved that they checked in on their surprise. My kids do it too. I love the simple joy of children.

  12. I was raised on Spam. I really loved it, but not enough to buy it now for my children.

I would definitely buy the gummy worms too if my girls asked for them.

  15. I've read that Dewey book - it reminds me of my parents' little town in Iowa.

Loved it - glad to hear the girls did too.

  16. Spam rocks! But I have learned that growing up in Hawaii has influenced my taste. It was our fav school lunch there! When I am asked to teach how to make spam musubi (sticky rice n spam wrapped in nori)...I always bring my own 'special' hawaiian meat ;)

Way to go tuba-dad! Respect da spam :)

And nice job on the worms. They will compliment the rat and bad nicely.
